This one should go in the non-music subforum, but before I move it, I have a question to any graphic design / illustrator folks here. I wanted to pick up a drawing / illustration program for my daughter (she’s in HS , taking graphic design class and loves art) and I was wondering how Corel Draw and Painter compare to Rebelle Pro.
Here’s a link where you can pick up Rebelle / Rebelle Pro for $9.99 / $15 US.
I’d say my first recommendation for illustration work is Clip Studio Paint (the normal pro version is fine. EX has specific set of tools that cater towards comic book stuff and animation.) It’s not perfect. It has some things to look out for (with the biggest thing for me to look out is how it deals with bitmap lines when you transform them). CSP’s perpetual licences are on sale quite often, but they do have convoluted update scheme going on nowadays as they’re trying to push for subs. They’re definitely not as bad as Adobe though and the subs are reasonably priced at least to this point. There is rarely need to update though; I still use the 1.x version on one of my computers and it’s perfectly fine/usable still for the paid work that I do.
Between Corel Paint and Rebelle… I’d say Rebelle has an edge due to its brush engine. Supposedly the 2023 version of Paint runs somewhat smoother nowadays than the previous ones, but I still find the program a bit clunky/bloated to use. The better version of Rebelle at ~15 bucks is a no-brainer though. Personally I’d get both… but to the honest, I haven’t used either for actual work. I just like having options should I need them. On the other hand, I feel like Corel has a lot more investors to please and some of their latest moves don’t necessarily instill too much trust in them in the future.
If your daughter is using iPad, do not forget Procreate. The company that does that seems to have their moral/ethics in the right place.
