NOTE: If there’s an area I have a great deal of depth giving advice to sample and plugin developers, it’s guitar sample libraries. IMO, by far, the two leading developers for gutiar libraries, when it comes to innovation and realism, are (1) Orange Tree Samples, and (2) Ample Sound. Ample Sound has publicly praised Orange Tree Samples for consistently leading the way, so that opinion is far from something rare. Of course, I’ve advised OTS. I’m a huge fan of the developer, and a friend, so you can certainly write off my point of view. But to those who appreciate people sharing their points of view, that’s mine. FTR, I’ve been obsessed with using virtual, sample-based guitar since the 90s when I was a working musician and still own my Roland U-20 rack mount version (the first sampled guitar library I recall using).
To those comparing the two developers, the first, most simple way of distinguishing them is that Orange Tree Samples, based in the US, uses the Kontakt platform, while Ample Sound (based in China) uses their proprietary plugin. There are plenty of other players who make guitar sample libraries, but I haven’t found any that approach the level of sophistication and realism of these two developers. Feel free to share your own view — you certainly don’t have to agree with mine! Know that when I share my opinions about one developer, I have received emails in the past from competitors that know me getting ticked off at me for sharing a favorable opinion on their competitors. Consider that I’ve done paid consulting for multiple string developers, and I’ve shared that I recently bought — and love — Spitfire’s Abbey Road Iconic String 2 library, which is basically as close as I’ve gotten to that Beatle-esque, Geroge Martin-produced string sound that I’ve been after. I also find that Fracture Sounds, Cinesamples, and Sonixima string sample libraries sound fantastic to my ears. I don’t know if I have a clear favorite or any developer really blows away another developer in that area when I look at a few of my favorites. But for guitars, no other developer is in the same league as OTS and Ample Sound. If you’re looking for the best there are, you really should be looking at those two. If you’re looking for something simple and don’t demand the ultimate level of realism that’s available, there are plenty of other choices. But none of them comes close to these two. For me, I want something that I can get a very realistic performance from in real-time.
