As the early adopters or beta test users of LinkedMusicians,, you're seeing the site evolve pretty quickly and I'm testing what engages you and what doesn't. I knew when setting this site up that the forum would be easy for everyone to adjust to and the social media walls / Groups would take more time. All along one recurring thought I had was this: The integration of social media with an old school forum would likely be easier to understand and experience if there were only one social media wall. That would mean that, in the beginning, when the membership was small that there would be much more activity -- and the activity would be much broader. As all members would see it, they would be apt to see content that resonated with them and participate / engage. With that in mind, all of the next week I'm going to be conducting an experiment. I am going to pull back the existing Groups / Walls, including this one, and consolidate everything in a single wall. Just one place where we discuss whatever you want to discuss -- of course, related to music. In time, I plan on re-introducing additional Groups, but I believe, from my experience developing and nurturing online communities that this will provide the greatest user experience for the majority of community members at this point. I promise that I will monitor usage very closely and will be using your feedback and polls to make decisions that I believe will result in giving you the best possible experience at LinkedMusicians. Now, I'm going to hand the mic over to you and invite you to provide your candid thoughts on how we can make this section of the site -- the social walls / Groups more useful to you and what you think about this experiment.
What do you think about temporary scaling back the GROUPS to a single social media wall for LinkedMusicians1 CommentWe really should embrace the whole Cakewalk Forum banning any references to LinkedMusicians while allowing people to post links to every KVR, Gearspace, VI Control — and a bunch of affiliate marketing links. I thought BandLab was out of Singapore. I guess they must have relocated to North Korea. It takes some truly awful decision-making to end up…Read More

I was talking with a friend and talked about LinkedMusicians. He asked for a clarification on what I meant by “it’s an online community of musicians.” I explained, it’s basically Facebook for musicians with forums focused on sharing deals, tutorials, documentaries, gear and music production. How would you describe it?

@Doug I know Peter is still tweaking stuff, but for the past couple days there should be an exclamation point inside a gay dot next to forum posts. If the exclamation is green, there are new posts- click on the (!) to jump to unread. If the exclamation is light gray on gray, nothing new since last visit. Are you seeing that?
4 CommentsAmusing typo and the editing function is presently not available (please don’t delete it!!!!) , but I consider the forum functionality complete. I will swap out the read / unread function if a bunch of folks want it because I’ve already tested it and it didn’t cause any conflicts with other scripts (the biggest concern when adding a new script /…Read More
@Brian, as I have said before, I am partly colour blind and I cannot really see the difference between the green and the grey exclaimation points. To you the difference may be obvious but not to me. A number of people have suggested using something with more contrast; I guess I don’t understand the resistance to doing that. Does the current system…Read More
@Doug. My apologies- I didn’t catch your post about color blindness. I actually brought that up to Peter a couple days ago. He said he is going to change the icon shapes to make the difference clearer. Right now it is green on white for un-read, and gray on white for read. That is likely indistinguishable for you, unfortunately. I think they…Read More
@bluescat, no worries. @peter has already reached out and I have offered to find some icons that might work. I had taken Peter’s comment that the site was feature complete to mean that green and gray exclaimation points were what was going to be used to identify read/unread messages. That was not his intent at all.

Hey @Peter; the site is really cooking! I haven’t visited the Group section for a while, but the changes have made it much more “friendly” IMO. Taking out the “new user” banners really helped the presentation, I think. I also don’t remember that box to the right —> with the ability to quickly see what is happening in Groups. The LinkedMusicians Deals Forum is far deeper and far more prominent than the Deals subforum many of us left behind at the Cakewalk Forum. I realize that it takes some getting used to. 1 CommentYep, you’re correct. We did have the ability to edit posts — but lost it when I installed some pretty significant enhancements on the site. The developer responsible for those enhancements is looking into the issues and if they can’t resolve them, they have some additional plugins I can purchase that do the same thing. So it’s easy to get the…Read More

I liked the system with the blue stripe for unread posts. It made it very obvious what was read and unread. Is that the one people found unintuitive? @blackjackschellac It make take several days, but the plugin allows me to upload my own graphic, so in the next several days I’ll replace it and I’m very interested in hearing or seeing screenshots of forums where you think the icons they use are highly intuitive.
I am not part of many forums, so I can’t really suggest any graphics unfortunatly. I am part of this forum and cakewalk’s and visit other site’s when searching for specific help. But I suggest keeping it simple. The most important thing is visibility. The Cakewalk forum has a simple dot in front of the title when unread that disappears when read.…Read More

I’m pretty sure it.was either the thread for people to report fixes or a thread in the Earky Adopters Group. I realize that sometimes the issues are that folks don’t understand how to use something. I wish I remembered which one had the stripes so I could note it. I take it you like that better than the one we’re using now?
The current system is the first one where I’ve had positive feedback. But if MOST people agree they want a prior system — and because I’ve installed, I think, a total of 4 different systems, I can’t recall which one had the blue bars, but I’d replace this one if a bunch of members can agree to it. 1 CommentThe number under a member’s username in the forum represents how many forum topics that user has created. It’s no surprise that @cclarry blows away everyone else. Hello Peter,
First of all, congratulations and thanks for the new page.
I had the problem of finding the save button when changing my avatar. I searched in vain for the save button until I pressed the crop button.
An automatic save – similar to changing the background – or a clear label for saving would be helpful here.@frank The reality of doing this on a budget of $1,000 US is that I’m using all off the shelf sofrware / scripts / plugins and the tool your using is pre-configured by a developer and I’d exceed my $1k budget with changing one feature and there are literally hundreds of them. I’m actually amazed what can be pulled off on that budget. I realize…Read More
