You have to use their nameservers, but there is no other lock-in to their services.
Personally, I’ve been pretty happy with Cloudflare Pages, which can be used for free if you don’t need all the bells and whistles and your site doesn’t have huge traffic.

Okay, turns out the culprit was an Ample Sound guitar. I haven’t been using them much, and they have all kinds of effects on by default, including echo and reverb. I thought turning off the amp was enough.
