I have their Hoard mandolin. I really like the way they handle tremolos (very well thoughout) but, in general, their sound is pretty rough/raw (it sounds like the player was angling his pick to purposefully get a scratchy sound) – even more so than OTS’ mandolin (which get’s really clean if you keep the velocity below 50%). So, if I must have tremolo I’ll either use the Hoard or go through the trouble of recording my own and use OTS (which sounds so close to my mandolin that I can easily switch back/forth and no one can tell which is which – listen to my version of Ashokan Farewell where tremolos are recorded while single notes are OTS samples). Also, the Hoard only goes up to B which is not high enough sometimes. I had to use Melodyne to raise the pitch to what I want. Luckily, the pitch is high enough that you don’t really hear any artifacts/wonkiness. It worked well enough.
I’m really looking for a 2nd nylon string guitar to pair up with the AmpleSound nylon guitar I use. I have 7 VSTi’s right now and the 2nd best nylon guitar is Ilya Efimov’s. Indiginus’s guitar sounds pretty good but it has some samples that are messed up, way out of character, unusable for me. The others I’ve tried (OTS, Rigid Audio, East/West, Spitfire) sound too metallic to my ears. Maybe if I could find a way to turn off fingernail attacks they’d be better. I haven’t tried that. I also haven’t tried any of NI’s offerings.
This is now way off topic – Sorry….
I don’t think what you wrote is off topic at all, and I love the mandolin-based song you shared, it’s really wonderful! The song, the performance, everything.
I love it when people share their music, and it’s pretty cool when they connect it to what they used to make a recording. Kudos. If you have any of your music on SoundCloud, I’d love to put it on an upcoming Mixtape (what I’m displaying on the page linked on the navigation bar and featured in the player on the upper right hand side of this page).
