It’s taken 3 years to make it what it is, and it’s regularly updated, sometimes multiple times each week, so it is constantly growing. The transitions to VST3 and Apple Silicon have proved to be a boon to those of us who like to get something for nothing. I’ll be adding them as I recall them.

In the “legacy versions gone freeware” category, please add ToneBoosters. The legacy v3 versions of their BusTools and Trackessentials bundles are available for the downloading, and they include some aMAYzing production and mastering tools. Jeroen Breebaart is a very bright guy:

There’s a slot in almost all of your categories for free FX from the MeldaProduction and Kilohearts bundles, so you might consider just letting those be assumed. Some products from those bundles are best-in-breed from ANY manufacturer, payware or freeware, IMO.

I built a DAW system for a friend a few weeks back and the number of high-quality free plug-ins I installed wound up being in the hundreds. The amount of great stuff available seems virtually endless, I had to just stop at some point so my friend could start using his system.

@superabbit. Any of your suggestions are insta-adds! Although, I’m kicking myself for missing some of that stuff on the list as I have all of it but one plugin (Pecheneg Tremolo). I think, we get to a point where we accumulate so much stuff, you forget about it when you’re trying to put together a list like this. I’ll try to add everything before the end of the day. (I actually add it on the back end — rather than like a normal post; it’s easier to manage; but I also lose the ability to edit it like a regular post).

I completely agree on the level of great freebies. There’s some very high quality stuff out there. Of course, there’s also a lot of poor quality and meh stuff. The motivation behind the lists is helping people with a strong desire to make music but lacking the budget to afford stuff like Komplete and Kontakt libraries. I realized that if I could sift through everything to find the best free stuff out there, we could make it easy for people to find some very high-quality free sample libraries, plugin instruments, and effects that would otherwise take many, many hours to find. I mean, just using the freebies on the various lists at this site, someone could — spending no money — create professional sounding tracks. I think in time, I’m going to put together lists of free instruments for various genres — like the best free piano libraries, guitars, bass guitars, electric pianos, tuned percussion, drums and percussion. So someone could, in a very short amount of time, get started with an amazing collection — all free. If you’re ever game to do something similar for effects, I would love it! The Best Free VST Effects Plugins List (see the original post) has been updated dozens of times in the last month. If you have a plugin that you think should be on the list, if there is a plugin on the list you’ve found useful or if there is a plugin on the list that you tried and don’t believe should be on the list, please chime in!

The value of this and the other LinkedMusicians “Best” curated lists is that we’ve actually tried and recommend everything you see on the list. Anyone can easily google to find free effects. Thousands of sites compile best of lists just to rank high in search engines. The result is that you end up wasting countless hours sifting through poor and mediocre plugins. Our “Best” lists only contain plugins and sample libraries that made the cut and were recommended. In the case of the Effects Plugins list, I’ve leaned heavily on community members with far more knowledge of audio engineering than me. I’ve only tried out some of them after they were recommended, and I’ve been blown away by how many great free plugins are available.

I’ve added a bunch of great free effects since my last comment. Sorry, I realize that we have folks subscribing to email alerts. Just check out the original post and you’ll see. Plugin developers are increasingly using a tactic of giving away a really good effects plugin for free to give producers a taste of their quality and establish a channel of communication with them. It’s a smart tactic. But as a producer, it also means that, if you look at all of what’s out there, you can find a lot of very high-quality effects for free, if you take the time to sift through everything and separate the good from the not-so-good. Our lists are focused on just presenting the best of what’s out there.

A reminder that we can really use your recommendations on great plugins to keep our list growing. It’s also valuable if you use any of the plugins on the list, that you chime in and share your personal experience and opinions. And, as I’ve mentioned before, if there are any plugins on our list that you don’t believe don’t deserve to make the list, please don’t be silent! Tell us why and I promise that you’re perspective will be seriously considered.

It looks like you’ve got my favorites on there that jumped to mind, except I don’t see Isol8 by TBPro Audio.

Here is their page of freebies. The Gear Space clipper (GSat) is excellent too. It’s a little “fiddly” if you just want to clip and move on, but it has some great options too.

I completely agree that the quality of free plugins has greatly improved over the last 10 years. The standard for a high-quality free effect plugin is substantially higher than it once was. As this list proves, if a producer has no budget, they can still find good to excellent quality free plugins of every kind. Just like sample libraries, the big challenge is sifting through everything to find the best that’s out there, which is why we have these curated lists.

When I was posting about the updated free Convology XT convolution reverb today, it occurred to me that Wave Arts Tube Saturator Vintage wasn’t on our list. That was definitely an oversight on my part. It is an excellent tube saturator. I was looking up reviews and what well known folks have said about it and the BPB guys said:”…Tube Saturator Vintage sounds incredibly good. The saturation is everything you’d expected to get from a tube amp, or, at least, as close as you can get to it in a software emulation.” However, the downside is that it’s a CPU hog. There’s a more efficient version that lists at $89 and is currently on sale for $49 at the time of this post. But if you want a great-sounding tube saturation plugin for free, it’s an excellent choice. It’s at the top of the “Distortion / Saturation / Lo-Fi” category above or you can use this link to go directly to the site:
