My yearly update plan just now expired (apparently I got it during last year’s BF sale). I’ve been generally happy with the updates so far, except the last one seemed to be mostly geared toward beat makers (I think). So, I’m thinking of treating this like I do with NI – only pay for the update and get caught up every 2 years or so. This should work, right? I can still update later even if I skip a few years?
They’re offering me $149 for another year of updates, but it’s cheaper just to buy a new license outright with the deal above. I could always fall back to that if I need to. So, I think I’m good to just wait it out and see what updates come along.
But, I can vouch that Studio One is a great, great DAW.

@fretman What DAW(s) did you use prior to moving to Studio One and how would you compare them? I’m guessing that you were a Sonar (pre-Bandlab) user, like myself and many others here?

Yes, Sonar. I moved to Studio One during their too-good-to-pass-up offer when Sonar got cancelled. One of my friends was using Cubase and dissuaded me from considering that – too much nickel/diming him to death. And after all the money I sunk into Sonar, I didn’t want to go there.
Plus, for some reason I lumped Steinberg into the same pot as Avid – professional, expensive, industry standard, slow to implement new technologies, not cutting edge, old cumbersome GUI/human interface. Not sure that’s fair, but that’s what was in my mind.
I’ve found Studio One highly intuitive. It’s easy for me to get around in it. But I admit my needs are simple. I do mostly sparse acoustic instrumentals. No synths here.
