I am a big Robbie Robertson fan and I finally got around to watching the doc about The Band. Sharing in case anyone interested. The doc is good. A lot of stuff I already knew from before. Some stuff I didn’t. I didn’t know Dylan lived in pink house with them for 6 months and thats when they made basement tapes for instance.
I am also a Band fan, but a much bigger fan of Robbies work and solo albums. I was devastated when he passed away. The sad thing about the Band is only one is still alive. The rest have all passed away. 🙁
I didn’t know much about them or their music what I was a kid growing up and expoiring different music outside of mainstream pop. My history with Robbie goes back to his first solo album. I didn’t know who the hell he was. I just liked the cover and I used to blow all my pocket money on LPs every week for no sane reason other than to blow that money away. I had no girlfreind to spend it on.
I remember taking it home and listening to it and being mesmerized by the production and songs. It was a Daniel Lanois produciton and they did it in Peter Gabriels studio in the 80s. A number of very good under the radar albums were made there, including Joni Mitchell’s Chalkmark in a Rainstorm.

Robertson was huge to me in my working musician days. I was a devout Christian– that’s why I turned down Veruca Salt. Roberson, like Bruce Cockburn, seemed very authentic artists who didn’t exploit their faith for marketing purposes, but were legitimately talented artists that were great storytellers.
