I’ve become infatuated with Heilung. They themself call it Amplified History. It’s based on old pagan European traditions, pre-Christian pre-Roman era. Little is known about that time in terms of music, they had drums, they had their voice and perhaps some weird snared instrument. The lyrics come from old coins, artifacts, grave inscriptions or passed on poetry. Music then, probably, wasn’t very melodic or intricate. So it’s a lot of drones and hypnotizing drums.

I’ve had the pleasure and privilege of visiting a ritual (as they call it, it’s not a concert) this summer and it was awesome. Something like I’ve never seen, heard or felt before. The female lead singer, Maria, is a world class vocalist. Her voice isn’t just a voice, it’s an entire instrument on itself.
