Falcon is a very full synth, plus there are a LOT of $oundware packs. It does come with a pretty large library of included “factory” patches though. The free UVI Workstation (think of it as Falcon “Player”) let’s you use purchased Soundware without owning Falcon. I assume they have a trial for Falcon, but if you are considering buying, do a little research for reseller deals. UVI also has given out vouchers for Soundware in the past to new Falcon owners, and they can be used against sale prices, so some planning will give you more for your $ I am not up on what they are offering right now, as I bought Falcon a long time ago. The $100 vouchers were good for 90 days when I bought in.
I’ve seen so many Falcon owners post positively about Falcon in the Cakewalk Forum — I know @Fleer is among them. I really don’t like UVI’s interface. I wish they would create a Falcon Player interface for UVI. I think they would have taken more marketshare from Kontakt if they did. While I’m a huge fan of Kontakt — it’s my go to sampler — I would LOVE if NI had some better competition. I wish UVI would step things up.
Your friend who keeps the beat. I suppose I’m also the chef at this place.
It turns out Fleer is absolutely right on this one! Just bought it.. Falcon is a monster. I could honestly not even bother about the sampler and use it purely as a synth and be completely happy with the purchase. It’s definitely not just a rompler!
The built in effects are way better than Kontakt which definitely helps, but it’s so versatile and then you can add samples to any of those patches as well of course. Kontakt has a place definitely and it’s a very immediate kind of interface. I’m still learning Falcon and I do think they could probably work on that aspect, but when taking everthing into account, there’s not much competition. Falcon trumps Kontakt. The factory library of sounds it comes with is a much higher quality than Kontakt to my tastes / ears.
That’s not to say that Kontakt isn’t great. I think it is and will continue to use it. But it’s much easier to get interesting and really warm organic sounds out of Falcon and it’s much more feature rich.
It dose have a modular kind of feel to it and I think that’s part of the appeal / problem. They’ve made it so you can do just about anything and that comes at a cost of layout and being able to add effects for example in any part of the synth, from the layer, to the keygroup, to the program, etc. But it’s starting to make sense and give it a month or so and that additional flexibility will make for some crazy experiments 🙂
