Out of genuine interest…if you’re discussing morals…how are pricing errors fair game? Trying to understand what you mean. If for example a reseller puts up a €149 product at €1.49 then aren’t people taking advantage of that pricing error basically screwing over the reseller. Or is there another way of looking at it? Do you have some sort of limit on what pricing errors you’d take advantage of…like if it’s €30 cheaper it’s ok but not if it’s over €50?
That is a good question and I’m definitely not trying to brag with my superior ethics. My highest horse is a miniature pony with bad knees, so it’s mostly just lying down, really.
From the point of view of the vendor, getting pennies is not much better than getting nothing.
From my point of view, however, the difference is that in the case of a pricing error, I still go through the purchase process that the vendor has set up. I am taking advantage of their mistake, but I obey the rules of the system. Legally speaking, I’m not doing anything wrong.
If I bypass that process without the vendor’s permission, then I it feels wrong to me, and it also probably is wrong according to most laws.
But I think it mostly comes down to the way paying for something puts me in a different frame of mind, and how I have many times purchased something only for the price to drop soon after. I might feel a bit bitter and entitled, and also tired of the pricing games many developers and vendors play. So if they one day make a typo, I don’t feel too bad about paying less than I’m supposed to for one more thing I don’t need.
That said, I might think twice if the pricing error is on a small indie developer’s website.
Edit: And usually, the vendors/developers do not need to honor the deal if there has been a pricing error, so they don’t need to take the hit if they don’t want to.
