Musio really should never have included all of their sample libraries in Musio 1. It made for a fantastic bargain. I think I paid $179 for it and later saw it go as low as $149 — and I think you could apply a discount code on top of that. It would have made a lot more sense for it to have included around a third of the libraries that are in it and then sell the rest separately in a marketplace.
But now, they’re making another big mistake with pricing libraries very close to their Kontakt and Kontakt Player equivalents. The reality is, the Musio sample player isn’t anywhere close to the level of sophistication of Kontakt or competitors like UVI or SoundPaint (disclosure: I’ve done paid consulting to 8Dio for their SoundPaint brand). Musio’s plugin doesn’t provide for the scripting that makes Kontakt great, nor does it have the effects that Kontakt has, nor does it come with the presets/snapshots that Kontakt libraries typically come with. Even more though, it’s relatively young and unsophisticated by comparison — add to that market concerns about the potential stability of Cinesamples due to some vigorous competitor attacks (see Mike Greene of VI-Control and a number of his developer friends and contractors who regularly join in on attacks against competitors).
Because I am a Cinesamples / Musio customer and I love the libraries, I want to see Cinesamples / Musio thrive. I hope Mike Patti can work out better pricing and brand positioning for Musio, because introducing it with the pricing as he did — and especially for third-party libraries that are pricing their libraries very close or the same to Kontakt and Kontakt Player versions is going to cause a lot of music producers to write off Musio. That should have been worked out before the marketplace was rolled out, because that’s when a brand will get more attention and it can be difficult to change the initial impressions in consumers’ minds.
