Nice cover Pete.
Thanks.
That was my first finished song since I started attempting to play again, more than 20 years after the repetitive stress injury causing tendinitis that stopped me from playing. I think that was 2021 — during the pandemic. I had just set up my new DAW PC and was so enthused that I googled “I Am The Walrus” chords, brought up a Wurly sample library and started singing and playing, no practicing, that was my first time ever playing that song and I just pressed record and kept adding tracks until I was done; I’m pretty sure that everything was a first take. I attempted to quantise some tracks to fix the timing issues, but the timing was so off in parts that I gave up on quantisation and I had thrown on so many effects on the vocals and Wurly that the background vocals were all direct input with no effects. I was surprised they even sounded okay (I was never more than background singer). I think I was so enthusiastic from all of those years of not playing, that even though tendinitis was causing me pain during the drum parts (mainly due to the tom parts), I kept playing and ended up doing a better job than I expected, all things considered.
It does crack me up that so many people online have told me that I sound John Lennon-ish or one guy who PMed me on SoundCloud, insisting that I was imitating Lennon. Nope, my kids will tell you that is what my natural voice sounds like. The reason they think I sound like Lennon is merely because of the artificial double tracking effect. Only once in all my years of performing did I ever sing lead vocals. One night, I was replacing a drummer for a band that did a lot of Beatles songs, and only got together with them to run through several songs. When I showed up at the crappy little bar they were playing and we did a sound check, I was told that I was expected to do lead vocals. When I told the guitarist and bassist I didn’t do lead vocals, they said that if I didn’t sing the show woudl be cancelled. So, that night, at 18 years old, was the only night I ever sang lead vocals. And the band did a bunch of Beatles songs, and I realized I sounded decent on songs Lennon sang. But I never sang lead vocals again after that night besides at jam sessions.
