I noticed that since starting this site you’ve referenced your family several times. On each occasion it was in warm, appreciative, graceful tones. It’s pretty easy to see a genuine closeness is there. Parenting can be tough sledding, and plenty of people do it poorly. Freud famously said our parents screw us up in our first two years and then we spend the rest of our lives straightening ourselves out. It sounds like you and The wife did a very admirable job. The seeds we plant today will bear their fruit tomorrow. May we all plant wisely.
Well, this site was intended as a place where people can learn about making music, share the music they make, share their musical stories, share the music that inspires them. My desire was never to make this site about deals, I thought that it would only be one small part of a site dedicated to the love of making music, learning more about music, and sharing our musical stories and the music that inspires us. I realize that a lot of our early group met at a deals subforum of a DAW software site, but if we’re buying all of that stuff, my theory is that we must be making music with it at some point (largely, that’s still just a theory).
My favorite thread on this site is 7 Questions to Get to Know Each Other Better. My motivation for this community was about people and music, not deals, even though is clearly something we all enjoy. My desire is to get us to move beyond just deals. To share our musical histories and what music means to us, to share more about what we’re doing musically, and to learn more about growing musically.
Yesterday was big to me — and I suppose because of my family history, being the son of a musician / music teacher and having grown up performing in recitals and public concerts with my siblings, my mother taking me out to sit in with bands at night clubs since I was probably around 9 years old (I realize that’s a pretty unusual story), then the school band, music was a very important to my family and me. My daughter and my son are pretty reserved people. My daughter is in HS, my son is in college. They definitely see their dad as more apt to start a conversation or talk to anyone with ease — and then get that person laughing; my kids are more on the shy side, but not extraordinarily shy. My daughter won’t sing in front of her family when it’s just us. I don’t even hear her rehearsing for concerts. So hearing her perform at her school’s holiday concert and do an entire song as the soloist — and finding that she has developed a really beautiful voice simply amazed me, and of course, as her father, it was very moving. I just wanted to share that musical story.
FTR, IRL, we joke a lot in our family. When my kids hear my voice on songs, they regularly say stuff like, “Stick with the drums!” And I have begged my daughter to sing on my little recordings, but I only persuaded her, my wife, son and cat, to sing on one song that I recorded a few years ago, during the pandemic, a cover (in 4/4 — shamefully) of “All You Need is Love.”
