It all starts with a dashboard used as a drum or Brian’s cymbal gizmo in a car and leads to truck drums (which I do own and love — except for the crash cymbal mapping). Consider them gateway drums. (Okay, that’s a very American joke reference — to the term “gateway drugs,” the idea that people start with pot and will soon be on heroin).

@bluescat I told my daughter — who is now taking driving lessons — about the cymbal gizmo for the car you shared and she said, “You’d probably love it, but you’re already distracted enough by playing the dashboard, you don’t need a cymbal to make it worse.” Hmm, it appears she’s not my biggest car-drumming fan. And, FTR, since I was a teenager, I had female friends who would complain about me playing the drums on school desks during class or in my car while driving, so there is a long history here. I don’t think I’m alone, though. A lot of my drummer friends from back in the day had the same bad habit. I did find it funny when my son was little and started air drumming in the car to one of Neil Peart’s drum fills in a Rush song. I happily said, “Hey, it’s genetic! You have the drummer gene!”  He did play the snare in elementary school and Jr High School band, just like his dad. But my daughter is the one with natural drumming ability, and she opted for the flute and choir.
