According to the second link, Computer Music will also be shutting down in the near future. Now that is sad.
This would be a clever signature if I could think of one.
That is sad news. Journalism is in terrible condition for a simple reason, not dissimilar to what happened to the record industry, most folks just don’t want to pay to read when they can find an illegally shared version online with ease.
Journalism has become a difficult profession to make a living at. I have a number of journalist friends — very experienced journalists with great credentials — who’ve found themselves going through multiple layoffs over the last decade. One of my friends, the editor of a top US marketing magazine when I got to know him, and the editor a top US IT magazine prior to that, ended up working as a freelance journalist after the marketing magazine closed down. But as that work became more scarce, he eventually switched to a different profession after a long distinguished career — there simply weren’t opportunities for him to continue in journalism.
I love reading Computer Music magazine. I always felt like a kid looking at a toy catalog reading that publication. I’m going to miss it. It would be great to find some of the former journalists with the publication banded together and started an online publication, as has been the case in the news journalism world on numerous occasions. The lesson from this? If you love a publication, support its existence by paying for it and give it a better chance of surviving.
