When I was 18, I was called by an agent to fill in for a drummer who quit his brother’s band. I met once with the guitarist and bassist for an hour of going through songs with the bassist singing. However, a week later when I arrived at the dumpy little bar for a sound check, I was asked to sing. I responded you mean background vocals, right? The bassist responded, “No, our drummer was our lead singer, so we need you to sing. Didn’t you know that?” I didn’t know that. I tried to persuade the bass player to sing. He told me the gig would be canceled if I didn’t sing. So, I was lead singer for a night. Fortunately, the band did a ton of Beatles covers and I knew all the words. But what I found is people telling me that my voice fit Lennon’s songs well. Consequently, I’ve been covering a lot of Lennon’s songs since attempting to play again because I’m not much of a singer and they’re very easy to play and sing.
Hardcore Beatles fans may be upset with me for this, but frankly, I didn’t know how to deal with the two time signature changes in my DAW– it seemed like too much work. And with my tendinitis making playing painful, I tend to play things once while recording, mistakes and all. So I went the easy route and played everything as 4/4, recorded the lead vocal and asked my family to help with the background vocals. And this includes every member of my family, including my feline son.
