The developer of the Imagiro shearwater piano has released a free, lite version of their upright piano sample instrument plugin. I haven’t had a chance to download and install it, but the demos of the paid library sound very nice and I definitely plan on trying it out this weekend. The paid version — which is NOT on sale at the moment — is $40. This is a Windows and Mac plugin.

Okay, I’m about to head out for dinner with the family, but I took 15 minutes to download, install and try the free lite version of the shearwater piano out and I really iike it.
It’s a very home-y, very pleasant, humble sampled upright character piano. You wouldn’t be using this when you’re playing classical music. It sounds a lot like the upright piano you hear on a lot of Coldplay’s big hits from the 00s. There’s a control on the GUI for tone that’s very useful. When I slid it up, it sounded very much like a honky tonk piano. I am a sucker for humble upright pianos and I’ll be adding this piano to the LinkedMusicians list of Best Free Sample Libraries for Free Players.
In other words, I recommend it. It’s free, it sounds very good to my ears, has decent dynamics for a free piano, and it has some useful controls. It hides the tone and paper presets that are available in the paid version for $40 (I shared a 20% discount code for it in the above post), which is fair — a developer can’t survive on free instruments. This free piano is good enough that I’m sure that I’ll be using it in some upcoming projects.
