Forums › ALL THINGS MUSIC › The energy and magic of this performance at a cramped dive bar blew me away.
Imagine walking into a small dive bar and hearing this. I’ll acknowledge that this was the first Zeppelin song that I fell in love with, at age 6 and was on the first rock album that I ever purchased. I played it so many times that I literally wore out the grooves on that track and had to buy another copy of the album (I still have that first album in my basement!). These guys are playing and singing their hearts out and it’s simply magic.
I wish I was there! But I’m so glad that they captured this. This is what it’s all about. It doesn’t matter what size the audience is. I think the most exciting gigs I played were the biggest at mid-size venues with audiences of a couple of thousand people. But I also couldn’t compare the different kind of magic to a night when I was forced into doing lead vocals all night and got an entire dive bar singing song after song with me. There’s something so special about being in a not very big room and people really feeling every note and beat of the drum in their bones and hearts. You don’t have to play in a big venue to feel the magic when music moves people.

We have a great organisation here in the UK called the Music Venue Trust. It exists to help grassroots music venues which are having a very challenging time at the moment for various reasons. In some cases the MVT have bought venues so that they are not subject to the whims of commercial landlords. We are fortunate enough to have a superb venue just 10 minutes walk away from home in York – it’s an ex working men’s club with a large music room with a bar and a separate bar area as well. Friendly staff, sensibly priced good beer, wide range of music and continually improving it’s an absolute treasure. We’re going to see protest sing Grace Petrie doing a stand up show and fantastic Canadian folk band Le Vent Du Nord there next month
