Today I learned…

I thought it might be a fun idea to create a general tips topic where you can dump your ‘things I learned’. Perhaps to keep it clean, we should refrain from quoting and replying (too much). Or only when something is not clear, or clearly wrong.

I’ll start:

• Today I learned that when you record a vocal at low volume in a room with background noise (so basically far less than ideal circumstances) and you use a gate and A LOT of compression, be mindful of the attack and release settings. There might be some noise creeping up in the quiet parts between lines. This could easily be fixed by changing the release to a little longer, depending on the situation.
• Or mute/delete those parts but that takes a lot more time and might sound unnatural when using reverb. A sudden change from slight reverberated room ambience in the background of the vocal to dead silence can be noticeable. This also applies to the attack & release settings on your gate. Too aggressive and the reverb could get a bit ‘choppy’.
