BiFilter2 from Tone2 Audiosoftware is now freeware. From Beat Magazine:

“BiFilter is a stereo multi-mode filter with a selection of 47 different sounding filter types. These filters are known by tone2 gladiator synth. You can combine all filters with 8 additional distortion types, FM, AM, Waveshaping and Lo-Fi effects to produce new sounds, making BiFiler far more than just a filter.”

Note: PC only, 64bit VST2 (no VST3)
Does not support external sidechaining – which is a real shame, for me that makes this plugin 90% less useful.

If you’re just looking for a freebie that handles hipass/lowpass/saturation that handles sidechaining with a decent GUI:
Filtron – Polyverse Music

Cons: higher CPU usage that BiFilter2.

Thanks for the suggestion, @thesteven. I know that I’ve installed all of Polyverse’s free effects plugins, but I don’t think I’ve really spent any time with them. I will be sure to do that in the near future.

On a related note, I took your recommendation for Filtron and added it to the LinkedMusicians’ list of Best Free Effects Plugins. If you have any more free plugins that you find worthy of recommendation, please consider sharing them in that thread, and I’ll add them to the original post (I have confidence that if you’re recommending it that it must be good, so I’ll automatically add them to the list).
