The average visit time is 7m 34s over the last 7 days. New visits are up around 25% over last week (which were up around 50% over the previous week). Visits from search engines have nearly doubled in the last 28 days. Pettinhouse is now running an exclusive deal for the LinkedMusicians community (FTR, that’s not an affiliate deal, Andrea just decided to do it after being enthused about LM and its values). There are dozens of indie developers I know that I want to bring over here, and we can get them to do exclusive deals with the community, but, to be really candid, I’m not going to start discussions about LinkedMusicians with developers I know until we become more active. It would be a mistake. The ones that are presently here are largely long-time friends that I’ve given advice to and they appreciate the mission of this community, a non-toxic music community where music producers’ needs are prioritized over that of advertising developers (which is the norm at the big forums).
But we can’t do any of that if this community isn’t engaged. And we also aren’t going to grow this community without visitors seeing discussions. So, just posting — saying if you like a deal, a sample library, a plugin, sharing your experience, or posting an even better deal you’ve found — conveys an active, compelling community.
I’m going to probably go for a few more days if there’s no activity and going to stop posting deals, working on other parts of the site. I was never interested in making another deals community. That’s not what I love about music. I love creating music. I love talking about music. Deals are fun, but deals were never a primary motivation for my doing this passion project. I looked at it as the thing another person would handle while I focused on the parts I loved — sharing knowledge about music creation, about music theory, about songwriting and composing, about production and studying music and production that we love.
It’s your call. This community was created for all of us. But at the moment, 90% of our traffic is from unregistered people checking out the deals. I’ve always said that if this community stayed the same size it was when we started — around 80 people — if it brought joy to people’s lives. At that time, I wasn’t even posting deals, a former member was. I still feel that way. But the lack of engagement (posts, really) have taken the joy out of this passion project, so the way I can keep it joyful for me is to focus on the parts of the site I enjoy the most. FTR, that doesn’t mean I’m going to close the site. It means that I’m contemplating not posting deals after this week or only posting spectacular deals. Of course, our members can feel free to post deals as much as they like.
