BTW, this thread is a good example of the kind of discussions that some forums are starting to censor when they are about advertisers. I know, first hand — from direct conversations — that VI-Control / Mike Greene takes steps to stop people from sharing negative experiences with his developer advertisers, including using a few developer contractors to beat up on community members when making posts that share negative experiences with developers. I know another community member who told me that he experienced one of the big gear forums censoring him for criticizing the practices of one of their big advertisers.
It’s really not a surprise and not that far from what’s long existed in the world of journalism, with the battle between advertising and editorial integrity. That is, stories that are unfavorable towards big advertisers tend to get major pushback from publishers and advertising execs at a news publication and the version that gets published may be watered down due to financial pressures on the editorial team. In a nutshell, any time an outlet is funded by advertising, the will of those advertisers usually outweighs journalistic integrity — or any integrity at all when it comes to forums.
This was one of the driving forces of this community. To not censor, and even encourage, people to express POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE experiences with and opinions of the companies we discuss here. I realize that most forum users aren’t aware of these practices, but they’re increasingly common at some of the big forums. As LinkedMusicians grows, it will always put musicians and producers first and never censor peoples’ right to share their positive and negative experiences with developers and any companies that make the products we use, regardless if they are advertisers or even people I know personally.
And I just want to say this, when I chime in, because I own this site, I hope no one feels pressure to agree with me on anything! I’m good with people having their own opinions, in fact, I appreciate it. I also love a good — friendly — debate and Waves has inspired a bunch of them!
