I have never publicly disclosed my volunteer work beyond my friends. However, I’m going to disclose some of it for this community, because I can vouch for this wonderful organization. I am a volunteer consultant / advisor for The Kids Equipment Network and they can use your support if you can afford it.
TKEN is a non-profit organization that provides mobility equipment like wheelchairs and prosthetics to children with disabilities from low-income homes. They work with St. Jude’s Hospital, Shriner’s Hospitals and other wonderful organizations that serve children with disabilities. I’ve known the founder, Tim Caruso, a physical therapist, for two decades. He’s actually the inspiration for my son to become a physical therapist. Tim is just an amazing and wonderful human being. He doesn’t take a salary for this organization. He works full time as a physical therapist and runs this organization on his own time. Tim’s as good as human beings come and this organization is as pure as it gets. It’s staffed by volunteers, including physical therapists, nurses, doctors…pitching in to help children at no cost.
If you can afford it and are looking to make a positive difference in the world, this is a wonderful organization.

One of my long time friends, named Greg, had lost both legs and an arm in an accident at age 14. He learned how to walk with prosthetics to the point where people had no idea. But around a decade ago, he broke one of his prosthetics and his insurer refused to pay to replace it. They would only pay for the cheapest wheelchair. My friend was heartbroken and his health started going downhill shortly thereafter and eventually passed away.
I have a number of friends with disabilities and I’ve seen how important accessibility equipment is in their lives. For my friend Greg, he only wanted to be treated the same as everyone else and not be labeled due to his disability. TKEN helps kids like Greg. Tim was inspired to start this charity from seeing unfulfilled needs of children when he worked at Shriners Hospital in Chicago — also a wonderful organization that helps children. I realize this community is about making music, but it was inspired by the kindness that I witnessed at the Cakewalk Forum of all of you. I hope you don’t mind me sharing this. Thank you so much, @bselack. Your contribution will make a real difference for a child.

This is nice Pete! At work there are a few causes for kids called “Letter for Santa”, where every one of us, we volunteer to get and prepare presents for kids in need. In these times, it would be nice for all of us to use our advantage to make some dreams come true for these kids and for others that would need a little help from the Santa’s elfs. 🙂
