For the posts I see from people who think that the industry is declining just take a good look at how KVR, GearSpace, VI-Control, Bedroom Producers Blog, and Rekkerd have monetized their sites to the nth level. From pop-up ads and interstitials to e-commerce at their sites, they’re finding ways to make money off of every click from their community members. The age of the independent, non-developer doing an online community or a blog for the love of it is basically gone. That may not be a concern for the average music producer, but the bias of these folks who control social media platforms and blogs is definitely something we should be concerned about. It was definitely a significant part of what motivated me to create this community. Now, I realize to those who don’t deeply understand all of that, they may think — what’s the difference, you use affiliate marketing programs. The biggest difference is in how their content is promotional and the censorship of community members who state things that conflict with sponsors / advertisers. It’s like the long-standing conflict between the editorial/journalist side of newspapers and advertisers.
To boil it down to the simplest outcome of this situation, it’s shown in how ANY member of this community can honestly share a negative experience with any developer in this community and not get censored. Try doing that at the big forums like VI-Control and GearSpace. You’ll not only be censored if you do it multiple times, you’ll be banned. Even more, you’ll find lots of conflicts of interest and financial compensation behind messaging that isn’t disclosed. It’s also in the increasingly common practice of developers using contractors to pretend to be community members who talk up their products and disparage those of competitors, a common practice at VI-Control.

I posted that last month. I have compassion for Sound on Sound, because they’ve historically been a really good publisher just struggling to stick around. I have a bunch of friends I’ve made from the world of journalism who’ve been struggling to survive in recent years — and I’m sure that you can say the same — and two of them who have been very successful in their fields, have had to change careers to pay the bills. Still, are we really going to trust Sound on Sound reviews to be unbiased when they’re selling some of the products that they’re reviewing? Rhetorical question, of course not.
