Just adding that the coupon is good for upgrades and bundles too. I didn’t get Playbeat 4 when it released for €29 upgrade a few weeks ago. Now with coupon it’s €20. I’m gonna take another look at the Soundbox stuff, which didn’t impress me when it came out. They kind of botched that premiere by not giving any library to use with the “free” player (they do now).
@bluescat I did the same as you re Playbeat 4 and I’m glad I did. Thanks for the heads-up.
I was also not interested in Soundbox on release, so will be interested in your view now.
@ZincT Well, I just finished spending an hour with Soundbox, and it reminded me why I passed on it last year. The sound and capabilities are pretty good, but there are two issues for ME that may not be of concern to others.
#1) The gray on gray color scheme and poor font scaling on Windows 4K display are just so fatiguing that tweaking parameters literally hurts. Maybe my poor sight. Might not be an issue for most folks.
#2) My main interest in “yet another sample player” is MPE support. I have two MPE controllers. Their implementation is just not working for me, and if there is a way to use it to modulate or affect timbre, it’s not obvious or in the manual. “MPE” appears once in the manual- in the title: “Soundbox is a MPE Virtual instrument platform for desktop and iPadOS”.
I’m gonna stick with Playbeat!
Thanks @bluescat that is useful to know. I will try the player version and see if it floats my boat.
Meanwhile Playbeat 4 for €20 is worthwhile.
In my case, I got the Lite version of PlayBeat 3 some years ago, but this version does not exist in AudioModern, and the product has not been added into my user profile because I bought it in other site… so… I can not upgrade it for $29.
I wrote them about it and I am waiting the comments.
Anyway… I haven’t the problems with the 4K monitors… 🙂

I’m not an AudioModern customer, but I think the guy in the video makes a pretty strong case. The way he criticizes this developer is civil and intelligent. Technically, he’s more of the anti-influencer category (that’s the label that’s being applied to these kinds of folks) and I actually respect those folks, because they’re not shilling. They’re giving an honest opinion that isn’t influenced by compensation (free product, sponsorship, the promise or hope of future work or money). I suspect the guy’s telling the truth, but I’d love to hear from our members that are AudioModern customers. I personally have no experience with this developer. @bluescat, you’re a customer. What are your thoughts?

I own most AudioModern titles and I like them a lot, with a couple exceptions. I was not aware that the publisher was deleting forum posts and generally handling their PR so poorly. Keep in mind that this video is over six months old, and there is now a free Player version with two free libraries to let you truly (freely) test Soundbox. I am not banning AudioModern from future consideration, as they do have talented developers. Mario Nieto seems to be one more outstanding of their contributors. He also markets a couple MIDI titles under his own name.
Thank you very much for your comments @Peter and @Brian
I appreciate your feedback!
I didn’t know anything about Mario Nieto with AudioModern.
I have the plugins Chord Generator and Harmony Bloom from Mario, and Chordjam from AudioModern is a competitor of Chord Generator.
Has been a surprise for me to know that.

So I’m not taking any sides when I say this. But… That video was released 6 months ago. According to Audiomodern’s own forum, Soundbox 1.0.1 was released on October 12th, 2024 (scroll down to the bottom).
https://forum.audiomodern.com/t/soundbox-update-log/2049
That video talks about and shows a screenshot of the like/dislike ratio of Soundbox’s launch video at 2:12.
According to Google’s AI (I know; not 100% reliable) and this source:
https://www.makeuseof.com/the-real-reason-why-youtube-hid-dislikes/
YouTube hid the dislike count of videos in November 2021. Dislike counts were not viewable externally for ~3 years before the launch of Soundbox.
On one hand, I realize that angry mobs in social media can be incredibly unfair, and that can terrify a small business owner. On the other hand, it doesn’t embody trust if they merely delete criticism and lash out at critics. They would do much better by reaching out and trying to understand critics. I would want to understand more about how the company handled things in the end. If they screwed up but ended up owning up to their mistakes, I can accept that.
On another level, this conversation — where we’re all sharing opinions that are slightly different than another person’s but keeping everything friendly and respectful— epitomizes why I decided to start this community, so that people can have discussions like this, where they could share positive or negative opinions about a developer without concerns that it could result in mean-spirited reactions, censorship or manipulation by a dishonest site owner. I think having that environment makes people more comfortable expressing their real thoughts and opinions — even if they’re the polar opposite of others . I find that it results in much more relaxed, honest and more valuable conversations.

I am completely agree!!!
And that’s why I love this forum.

“They would do much better by reaching out and trying to understand critics.”
In my opinion, this is the key.
Understanding the motivations behind negative comments helps you know and analyze what needs to be improved or changed.
Here in Spain (I don’t know in other countries), we often use the mantra “the customer is right” to try to self-criticize before responding.

Thanks for the kind words @Jorge.
Over in the US, there’s an old saying, “the customer is always right.” Now that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but I’m an empath by nature, and I think businesses are wise to be empaths. A wise business needs to NOT be defensive but put themselves in their customer’s shoes, even when the customer is sorely disappointed and hypercritical of them.
