This amp is something a little different. Obviously, if you crank it up a bit it does the whole extremely hairy death metal distortion thing very well. But you can back off the gain a bit and get closer to some classic heavy rock sounds, albeit with a little bit of a different character. The OD pedal is interesting as well because you can use a fair amount of its gain range and it only adds usable gnarly juice to the signal without getting too fizzy. In the default, the amp is a little spongey, even with OD engaged. But there is a tight knob on both the amp and the OD, so you can get it to have a more immediate attack, if that is what floats your boat. Be aware that this amp doesn’t have a true clean. You can turn the gain to zero and it still outputs a slightly wooly signal. You can also bypass the amp altogether and the signal is still hot enough for a usable semi-clean. Though it is a little dull in character but can be easily brightened with the post EQ and FX section. Overall, not necessarily better than anything, but certainly a bit of a different tonal character, and would be able to provide an absolute nasty wall of sound for layered guitar sections. FYI: Aurora have also said that they will be releasing a bunch of alternate OD pedals for this thing to broaden its sound pallette even further.
