The song is, of course, incredibly easy to easy to play. I mostly recorded this song because my wife and I both love the Gary Jules version featured in the movie, “Donnie Darko.” As usual, I started playing piano and singing to a click track and recorded the additional tracks one by one. I actually attempted singing the song in two other keys before deciding on this one in D Dorian.

A song that I didn’t double track the vocal, which always seems to result in people comparing my voice to that of John Lennon. In my working musician days, I mostly –with few exceptions — did background vocals. I never wanted to sing, nor do I have a voice good enough for lead vocals. As I started working as a drummer at 18, doing background vocals helped me get more work as drummer. While piano was my first instrument, I only worked professionally as a drummer,. I occasionally played keyboards at rehearsals or jam sessions — which I held a few times a month back in the day. I once played keyboards with a band rehearsing for a recording session at Pumpkin Studios (where Styx and REO recorded a lot of their albums), which resulted in my being asked to play keyboards with a working band someone there was a part of, but I really got the most joy out of playing drums in a band context and turned down the offer. I was a very good drummer and a very mediocre keyboardist — far below the level of my mother and sisters, who were superb pianists and organists.
