Superior Drummer 3.0 is my go to acoustic drum plugin. I love swapping out drums and cymbals and using effects that I can save as presets inside SD3, but I cannot put together a killer effects chain and handle effects for a complete drum kit, so I just tweak and replace existing well created presets.
So, last night I was researching — okay, googling and visiting a drummer’s forum I’ve always enjoyed — SD3 presets, and I spent a good deal of time checking out the various preset makers selling their wares. In the process, I came across one that I thought does superb work and charges less than the others I found. So I sent an email asking some questions — plus, I had a hard time finding my to his preset bundles — and I placed an order for 10 presets for $15.99 and just had a chance to try them out. I had to share this, because I think they’re really great. And no, for any cynics, I didn’t get anything free from the developer. I don’t know the guy beyond asking some questions and placing my order afterwards.
The kits mimic the sounds of drum kits on various songs. And they do a fantastic job of mimicking those kits, but even if they didn’t they sound great.
The result? I’m more prone to spend $2.99 a kit or $15.99 for 10 kit presets with this guy than to buy additional SDx’s and EZX’s for a lot more money just to access great-sounding presets from the drum kits I already have. Consider this my recommendation. While I went for 10 rock kit presets — I listened to just about every non-metal or country preset demo, regardless if I knew he song it was based on. The genres covered are rock, metal, and country. I went after a bunch of rock presets. If you own SD3, you really should check this out.
These are demos for two of the ten preset kits I bought:

I usually just use a dried out 🙂 Legacy of Rock Jet Black kit so I listened to the No Doubt songs based on that SDX. Sounded good – will probably buy a bundle of 5 or 10 at some point.
I asked the developer if he’s open to recommendations for new drum kit presets and he said that he was.
I told him that I’d love to have a really basic rock kit that sounds like Jet’s “Are You Gonna Be My Girl,” and he said he’s open to it. I checked out a bunch of SD3 preset makers and I didn’t find any that did rock kits as well as this one — and none of them were this inexpensive. Most of them focus on metal kits (which is great for everyone who does metal, but I don’t do metal; this guy does metal kits too, but, of course, my interest is rock kits).
He was really friendly too. I told him about this community and linked to this thread, inviting him to come here. I thought if there are more of us who like what he does, we could make suggestions for future kits. I’m sure that I could come up with more kits I’d love to have. For $15.99 for 10, it’s an easy buy for me.
