Why LinkedMusicians is Different (and Why That Matters)
I’ve spent the week reaching out to sample developers, inviting them to join us here. I realize that some folks might think that LM is just another deals forum. While we have a deals forum, LM is a complete departure from the legacy gear and composer forums. Here is how we’re different:
1. A Zero-Tolerance Policy for Toxicity
Trolling, harassment, and “developer wars” have been normalized elsewhere. Not here. We’ve removed the bigotry, politics, and insults to create a space where you can actually focus on music.
2. Radical Authenticity over “Hype”
My background is leading digital marketing then founding a dot com, which has actually made me loathe “bullshit” more than anything. I believe in authenticity with passion. Legacy forums have become manipulative, censoring members who post honest criticisms of major advertisers.
We have members—including a respected music journalist—who were banned from the “Big 3” forums just for sharing a negative experience with a developer/advertiser. I personally was told by VI-Control owner Mike Greene that VI-Control isn’t the place to share negative experiences with his advertiser/developers — that conversation greatly inspired this policy. LinkedMusicians is producer-centric, not advertiser-centric. We encourage honest conversations. If a tool isn’t up to par, we want to hear it. Honest brands value that feedback; the others aren’t our priority.
3. We Want You to “Beat the Deal”
Our deals section functions differently. Most deal subreddits or Facebook groups prioritize affiliate commissions over your savings. If you post a better price than the admin’s link, you get banned.
4. A policy of not allowing developers, their employees and contractors, and influencers to pose as reviewers and hype up libraries they work on or make money on without clear disclosures. When you go to VI-Control, there are many times that contractors hype up libraries that they’ve worked on and make royalties on and berate competitor sample libraries without disclosing their affiliation. It’s been going on at KVR too. I don’t really know about GearSpace. But you won’t see it here — or if you do — it will soon be caught and that individual will be banned. We have specific policies in place to guard against these practices. We’re focused on taking the bias and deceptions out of social media conversations.
At LinkedMusicians, we encourage you to beat our posted deals. We use affiliate links to keep the lights on, but we will always prioritize the best price for you—even if it’s a non-affiliate link. If you find a better deal, post it. We’ll even “Like” it.
A Passion Project with a Purpose
LinkedMusicians is my love letter to my days as a working musician and to my late mother and siblings, who were my very first bandmates. This isn’t just a social media platform; it’s an attempt to build a kinder, more ethical corner of the internet for the next generation of creators.
I am incredibly grateful for everyone here. Let’s continue to grow this community and show the developers who inspire us that there is a better way to connect. And the biggest thing you can do is post, comment, let us know that you’re here!
