It is a really good library that was released several years ago. It’s on my list of the best free Kontakt instruments. I keep it updated regularly.

Okay, beyond Robert F Kennedy, I have no idea what RFK means and, you know, I must know! Do tell, @superrabbit.

A note to everyone. No one here gets any kind of penalty for swearing, as long as you’re not swearing at a person. But our automoderation software automatically holds posts with obscenities so that a mod has to then edit and approve them.
If you use a character like #@%* in place of one of the letters, it will get posted right away.

“RFK,” well, Fleer kinda said it, it stands for Requires Full Kontakt.
It came from non-full Kontakt-owning people seeing “free” in a topic title and initially expecting the library to be free as in “not needing to first shell out $300 for software required to use it” then being disappointed when they’d follow the link and read the (sometimes) fine print.
The most prolific poster over there didn’t recognize a world where not every producer of music has a license for the full edition of Kontakt, so there were many postings of Kontakt libraries that you could obtain for free but which wouldn’t work with Kontakt Player.
I can remember at least one such library that I went as far as getting the license for before realizing that it only worked with a program that I didn’t own.
So when I’d see one of these deals that for me and many others was not a deal, I’d reply “RFK” to save everyone else the time and trouble.
It’s not as much of a thing these days since manufacturers of Kontakt libraries are releasing more libraries, many of them free, that work with the Kontakt Player, but when Player was first introduced, there was pretty much Sennheiser DrumMic’a and the tiny Factory Selection and very little else. I think Native Instruments charged companies a hefty extra license fee to distribute Player-enabled libraries, free or not. Quite a disincentive to release loss leaders.
Things have changed so much at Native Instruments that Komplete Start by itself is now a must-have, whether someone obtains any 3rd-party libraries or not. The amount of content they give away is astonishing. I guess they’ve figured out the value of loss-leaders as a marketing tool. Kontakt Player 8 is so good that for the first time I’m thinking that if I could justify the outlay, Kontakt 8 would be nice to have.
I’ve only just scratched the surface of the new features they added to Player.

Only after I posted did it occur to me that it stood for Requires Full Kontakt. I remember that from years ago, I just hadn’t seen it in a while. I do my best to point out when a freebie requires full Kontakt. My list of free Kontakt libraries states when a library is compatible with the free player. You’re right that a lot more freebies are coming out that are compatible with the free player. Where you’re not going to see it is with very small developers and hobbyists, as the developers have to work with and pay Native Instruments to license their library for Kontakt Player.
The logic for developers giving away free Kontakt Player libraries is low cost advertising for their brand. It costs money to advertise and make the market aware of a brand and its offerings; a free library gets them earned advertising (free publicity basically) that would otherwise cost them money. It’s also something even more valuable and difficult to attain with paid product — it provides the user with experience using the brand’s products. It also serves as creating a direct marketing channel with the consumer — and that’s also something that is costly through other methods.
I’ve made the case to various developers I’ve given consulting advice to that they should strongly consider regularly offering free high quality libraries. It’s actually a great investment.
