“RFK,” well, Fleer kinda said it, it stands for Requires Full Kontakt.
It came from non-full Kontakt-owning people seeing “free” in a topic title and initially expecting the library to be free as in “not needing to first shell out $300 for software required to use it” then being disappointed when they’d follow the link and read the (sometimes) fine print.
The most prolific poster over there didn’t recognize a world where not every producer of music has a license for the full edition of Kontakt, so there were many postings of Kontakt libraries that you could obtain for free but which wouldn’t work with Kontakt Player.
I can remember at least one such library that I went as far as getting the license for before realizing that it only worked with a program that I didn’t own.
So when I’d see one of these deals that for me and many others was not a deal, I’d reply “RFK” to save everyone else the time and trouble.
It’s not as much of a thing these days since manufacturers of Kontakt libraries are releasing more libraries, many of them free, that work with the Kontakt Player, but when Player was first introduced, there was pretty much Sennheiser DrumMic’a and the tiny Factory Selection and very little else. I think Native Instruments charged companies a hefty extra license fee to distribute Player-enabled libraries, free or not. Quite a disincentive to release loss leaders.
Things have changed so much at Native Instruments that Komplete Start by itself is now a must-have, whether someone obtains any 3rd-party libraries or not. The amount of content they give away is astonishing. I guess they’ve figured out the value of loss-leaders as a marketing tool. Kontakt Player 8 is so good that for the first time I’m thinking that if I could justify the outlay, Kontakt 8 would be nice to have.
I’ve only just scratched the surface of the new features they added to Player.
