Forums › ALL THINGS MUSIC › Observation: Music Making Related Blogs Little More Than Promo Devices
Going back a decade ago, music making blogs were fun and passionate. But along the way, these folks seemed to lose the passion and it has become purely about selling products and affiliate marketing. Don’t get me wrong, I am trying to use affiliate marketing to help me with the costs of running this site, but it;’s not really comparable. Why? At the volume these blogs are at, they’re getting lots of free product, cash and making good money from affiliate markeitng. I created this site as a passion project.
So, you may be saying — who cares and I don’t see the difference. The difference is, these bloggers started out driven by passion, talking about doing something they love and now the ones I used to really enjoy have become little more than product marketing channels. I realize that this community chooses to largely focus on deals, and that’s fine, but this is my passion project, and my interest is more in encouraging people to make, learn about and share the music and discuss their passion. I’m not knocking commerce. I’m more disappointed at how blogs I once loved are clearly only focused on making money for their owners. Of course, if all you cared about was looking to bloggers for advice buying products, maybe that’s fine for you, but even then, these guys are pushing products from developers that pay them a great deal of the time (again, you can say that I’m doing the same with this community — but probably less than 5 percent of the deals posted here are affiliate deals and I have a habit of not posting products I don’t think are good value / good quality.
Anyhow, I’m curious if others here have noticed this change and how they feel about it. I’d love to get your thoughts.
