[This message is seen only by our registered members. As the first collaboration is ready to roll out, I’ll be announcing this publicly.]
Imagine LinkedMusicians as a collaborative platform for musicians, singers, mixers, and engineers.
For a comparison, think about Playing For Change, a beautiful, collaboration of musicians and singers from all around the world, who perform various genres. Playing for Change was one of the big inspirations for this effort. This is their mission statement:
“Playing For Change is more than just music. We’re a movement that believes in the power of music to break down barriers, connect people, and create positive change.”
Of course, that is a core belief of LinkedMusicians too; the belief that music breaks down barriers, connects people, and has the potential to create very positive change. I am a huge fan of what Playing for Change is doing and eagerly anticipate each new release. But their effort is limited to mostly professional musicians and a core group of musicians, it’s not something that you and I can participate in as musicians, singers, or mixers. My vision is for LinkedMuscians to be a more open collaboration platform where ANYONE can participate or even just use the files to play along with.
I’m going to be collaborating with @gregjazz, AKA Greg Schaelpfer, the founder of Orange Tree Samples to produce the basic tracks for the kickoff collaboration. Greg and I will put together basic tracks, I may do a scratch vocal (that I want a real singer to replace). We’ll lay down guitar, bass, piano, shruti box or harmonium, drums, and percussion, and invite you to either add your parts to our parts or replace our parts with your own. There will be two paths. I’m going to manage the creation of a single official LinkedMusicians version of the song. Consider this an open invitation to singers, guitarists, bassists, and other musicians to link up and collaborate on that version. if you can play at a high level, this is the ideal spot for you.
What I’d love to have is a good singer who loves to sing the blues or blues influenced rock songs. A harmonica player would also be great. But if you play any instrument that you think would be a good fit, let’s hear from you. I did a 16 minute rough draft to try to work out how I want to play the drums and get a sound I like that I sent to Greg and he said he’s in. He’s a fantastic musician. At most, I was an excellent rock drummer, so getting to play with musicians like Greg long past the days when I was a serious player (pre-tendinitis) is pretty exciting. But I know that can lay down a really good part for this song. and will rise to the challenge so that everyone has something inspiring to be part of.
Here’s what Playing for Change did with the song (I love it):
I’d love to get your thoughts and even more I’d love to see who’s interested in collaborating (again, everyone will have access to the files, you can remix them, play along with them, and share what you’ve done, but there’s going to be a single LinkedMusicians official version that I’m working on).

If you have song suggestions for covers that you believe will appeal to a wide range of our community members, please post them in this thread. I actually have written an original song specifically for this that I will be introducing in the next few months.

I’m already working on the second collaboration song, “Green Plastic Trees” by Radiohead. I would welcome anyone who wants to collaborate on the initial version. Everything but drums is open, but it would be especially great to have a good singer on it.
