I still love S-Gear! S-Gear is still my first choice to try out some new ideas both in the DAW environment and just as a standalone. But to be honest this is my reason– It is very familiar to me, and has a very low CPU hit and i think that the “cleans” still sounds very good (at least to my aging ears).
I use S-Gear mainly for clean and early close to breakup tones. It is quick, fast to load. And still sounds great for Fender and Dumble clean tones.
Having said this, I am now using Tonex (desktop version) more and more. Why? Tonex has dropped in price and is very affordable now. Also Tonex has a great 3rd party community with hundreds of captures out there. Tonex has many more options. Many captures are free, (some a great, some are good, some are horrible). I find myself using Tonex for “Matchless cleans” and “Dumble/2Rocks cleans and early breakup tones.
S-Gear does have “The Duke” which is a great clean dumbleesque amp and is easy to adjust and dial in with low CPU. But some of the Tonex 3rd party Dumble/2Rocks captures are just great and are more and more convincing.
Given that Tonex is now very affordable and easy to find cheap & free 3rd party captures (and some expensive and Great), I suspect that many if not all of the VST Amp modelling Sims will be fighting to stay in business just to compete with Tonex. I am actually really surprised that S-Gear has not had to offer more sales just because of Tonex is so affordable and so convincing and has a growing and versatile 3rd party capture community
Sorry–if this has drifted off topic.
SO–S-Gear is still GREAT. This $79 is the lowest price i have seen in years. I probably paid that much for it (10+ years ago!).
Still Great, still usable, still realistic to play! I still use it
