With ST hitting the sub-$20 price I wonder what its future is. Syntronik and Sampletron 2 got the axe some time ago, so I wonder if ST4 is slated for being discontinued as well. It makes me think IK is moving away from soft-synths and more towards a guitar-focus. Has peter from IK got anything he could share with us about this?
I never got along with ST4 for some reason. Other than that, I find myself usually unimpressed by VIs with all-encompassing content. They have lots of instruments but they’re all shallow. No depth and only good for adding some background/nuanced texture or for sound design. Most of my mixes attempt to be realistic and are sparse, so everything is heard. My instruments need to have more articulations/choices that only seem available in VIs specific to that instrument. It gets expensive and time-consuming to play each VI well.
Studio One, Windows, RME UFX, Yamaha MSP7
Peter, being a marketing manager, isn’t going to be authorized to share information on IK’s plans for SampleTank unless the CEO has authorized it. But there’s no harm in politely asking him. SampleTank has never been a priority for IK. They’ve gone more than 10 years in between major versions (in between 2 and 3).
SampleTank (2001): The original virtual instrument was released.
SampleTank 2 (2003): The second version came out approximately 2 years later.
SampleTank 3 (2014): A decade after its predecessor, the third version was released. This was the longest gap between major versions.
SampleTank 4 (2019): The most recent major version was released roughly 4.5 years later.
When IK sold SampleTank 4 XL through Humble Bundle for $1, I did question their plans for SampleTank — that is, whether or not they would continue with the product line. The release of their modeling lines — MODO Drum and MODO Bass — both of which I think are excellent products, and their PianoVerse, a high-end line of “deep-sampled’ piano libraries, makes clear that they are committed to virtual instruments beyond plugin effects. But with the recent closures of some older, but beloved releases like SampleTron, it does make one wonder (I’m friends with Peter and Dave Kerzner, who is responsible for SampleTron, but I’ve never asked either about that or SampleTank — Dave’s brother is, I believe, the VP of Sales for IK). The possibilities are endless. IK could be planning a big step up for the product line, they could be closing it and going in different directions. They could have decided they’re no longer interested in pursuing an everything sample library plugin, but prefer to focus on more specialized, detailed instruments like PianoVerse. For me, their doing PianoVerse was a great statement that the company is committed to doing state-of-the-art sample libraries. I thought it was great news.
@peter-ik I realize that you’re limited in what you can share to what’s officially permitted, but can you tell us if there are any plans for future SampleTank releases or if there are other sample-based product releases coming from IK in the near future (with the next 12 months)?

I have never liked SampleTank either. There are only a handful of sounds I found useful or distinctive and I don’t like the interface at all. I’d rather have Dimension Pro.

Peter, thanks very much for that. I appreciate that Peter from IK is limited in what he can say, but thanks for asking.
I don’t have any news to share but I’m sure we will have sample-based content coming. Our last endeavor there was a ninth piano for Pianoverse but SampleTank is not discontinued or anything so don’t worry about that for the time being.
I represent IK Multimedia so I will post official things. I also may just post random things as a real human being because I also represent one of those. I will try to be clear when I'm just speaking as Peter, instead of "Peter from IK".
I make no promises to be 100% accurate in doing so, though. 🙂
