Suggestion Box Thread

As one person managing the design and development of this site, the maintenance, upkeep, I need to keep things efficient. Moving forward, please provide all suggestions in this thread. It enables me to have a single place instead of many threads/topics, which consume much more time.

We had that for a bit, but the feedback on it was negative, until after I pulled it than I had one positive response. The feedback on the current system. which replaced the blue bar system, has been overwhelmingly positive. There’s really not even any other options out there beyond the 4 or 5 we tried. This was the last option and I was pretty happy that there’s been very positive feedback on it. Are you having any issues with it or you just prefer the blue bar not read system better?

I sincerely wish I could accommodate everyone. I really want to. But in the end, the consensus was that people were happy with the current system that replaced the horizontal bar. I never weighed in on it, but personally, I liked the bar better too. I just wanted to find the system that made the majority of users happy and the blue bar didn’t work for some users. I promise that I will keep my eyes open if another system that I think can make everyone happy comes out. None of this was custom coded, so there were a total of 4 or 5 options and we tried every one of them and settled on the one that everyone liked best, which is now in place and seems to make most people happy.

Hi Peter – one thing I liked about the forum that shall not be named 😉 was the Thanks emoji – mostly directed in my case to Larry of this parish – would it be feasible to have one of those – no worries if not – I’ll just use the like emoji

You would not believe how time and energy I spent researching reactions for that (we all seem to agree on wanting the thanks emoticon). I had to buy two different plugins (scripts and graphics in a package), one for the forum and one for the Groups /walls, and they are both subscription pricing that renews annually (FTR, I like the one on the Groups / walls much better; so around $70 US a year for the two; there’s a reason it looks like doing this site will cost over $2,000 a year at minimum). I can’t customize the one on for the Groups / walls, but I can customize the one for the forums (here) but it’s really not well executed by the developer. There’s is something I’ll give a try — replacing the angry emoticon with a thanks emoticon. But I’m not totally sure it will work based on what happened with the Blue thumbs up I added (note that you still see a white Like on the left and right). Still, I’ll give it a try in the next few days.  If that doesn’t work, I’ll just keep my eyes open and talk to the developers I’ve gotten to know and see if I could persuade one to make it for an affordable price.

I’ve got a few:

1. This I’ve mentioned before, but please please find and nuke the thing that blocks middle mouse button from working on this site.
2. If possible, allow us to hide (and bring up I guess) the right side tab (same as how you can do it with the left one).
3. Add the share stuff -icons on the same line with the reaction button. Or bring the like button above the signature. Currently one thing affecting readability is that some people use the signature, some don’t, so a natural post cut off point between posts is sometimes a bit muddled. Which brings us to…
4. Make the signature more distinctive (or less intrusive) and thus easier to mentally ‘filter’ from actual post content. I believe this could be achieved with smaller font, different [lighter?] font color and muting signature link color.
5. I like the newly bolded post titles in the forum view. However, is it possible to have non-bolded thread title if there are no new posts since you last read the topic? Also, please remove the bolding from the date.
6. Another readability/declutter suggestion, I think the “voices” column in the forum view is unnecessary.

This is a small thing… If you use the heart reaction on a post, the emoticon that shows up assigned to the post is a smiley with hearts in its eyes. Would it be difficult to make it a heart instead, to match the selected reaction?

I spent a ridiculous amount of time researching and testing reaction plugins for the site. You’re referring to the one that’s on the forums. The plugin allows you to customize the reactions that post on the left, but it doesn’t change what it displays before choosing or on the right. I plan on sending the developer a message asking if he would consider a future update of the plugin that modifies what’s shown to match the user changed image. Alternatively, I can just change it back to the original image, which candidly I don’t like (hence why I replaced it with a heart).

I also want to recommend that the default image is changed to an outline that doesn’t look like a like.

Okay, everyone should know this, because it’s blowing my mind. @lamia6 keeps doing all of this amazing work on this site. Your request and even more what I stated I wish the paid reaction plugin could do — it now does. Not because the developer who made it made that happen or I suddenly learned how to code (I didn’t), but because @lamia6 read this and made it happen.

I realize that I keep making posts praising how much she’s helped on this site, but @gregjazz, you posted that, I posted that I agreed with you and was more disappointed with what that plugin with additional wish list features and was going to contact the plugin developer to request he consider my suggestions in a future update (which would probably not happen, based on the history I can see of similar ignored customer recommendations). It’s mindblowing how lamia6 does better work than the developers I’ve paid, and she’s just been doing it to be a helpful part of the community. I cannot thank her enough.  So yeah, we now have what you and I hoped for, completely thanks to lamia6.
