If you follow Marc Jovani’s orchestral “blog” (I highly recommend getting his email list for some fantastic insights into orchestral work) then you’ll know his default stem compressor is the Shadow Hills Mastering Compressor, preset Mastering Medium PGM (#22). “This preset just works – I don’t tweak it”.

This algorithm makes a lot of sense to me. I haven’t tried it yet but it should sound much more natural.
