With the recent news of Native Instruments (NI) entering preliminary insolvency in Germany, I’ve become increasingly cautious about developers with high fixed assets. Personally, I think we should be careful about investing heavily in EastWest and VSL right now.

It is possible that Dr. Martini could sell off the crown jewel of NI. It would raise money. Now, just imagining that and potential buyers in the industry — and not an investment group — what are other players you would be interested in it going to? This is my hot take on potential places Kontakt could land if Martini decides to sell it off. (NI…Read More

Peter DeLegge replied to the topic What are the BEST/WORST sample library & plugin purchases you've made & why? in the forum Samplers, Sample Players & Sample Libraries
@fretman I’ve known from developers and pro musicians have told me about various issues with libraries. I can’t say which ones told me about various libraries, but the problems are not that rare. Although I will share one because of the developer’s ethically problematic practices of using his contractors to attack his competitors and make shill…Read More

It appears that the number of free synths from Infected Sounds has increased from 8 — which I posted about a few months ago — to eleven (there’s a Spinal Tap joke in there somewhere).

I like a lot of their products but don’t buy often since they charge the same prices even when the products have aged. This is also a good example of why many of us are apprehensive about subscriptions.

LinkedMusicians replied to the topic Native Instruments GmbH is in preliminary insolvency in the forum Virtual & Physical Music Gear Deals
It’s also worth noting that by US standards, Native Instruments is considered a small business. On forums, people talk about NI as if they’re a really huge corporation; they’re not.
NI has 400 to 500 employees and are estimated to have annual revenue of $78.5M to $113.7M. That’s pretty far from Microsoft and Apple or even a mid-size company (by…Read More

This is a slight update on Skybox Audio. I recently used J Celeste from their Chimes product in a sparse baby lullaby instrumental. During the solo there’s nothing else going on, so it’s quite exposed. I kept hearing a whirring/motorized noise in the background that was bothersome enough to cause me to dig into it. I loaded the waveform into RX11…Read More

@fretman I think those are really helpful insights. They also could be useful in a section I’m contemplating adding that lets us review developers, but for now, it makes sense to have it here (plus, the tool we use to break off comments from threads is presently not working).
I personally don’t have much experience with EastWest libraries. I only…Read More

LinkedMusicians replied to the topic Should this reaction emoticon replace the standard thumbs-up at OPEN MIC? in the forum LM Announcements / Site Discussion

After trial and error, I replaced the LIKE reaction for OPEN MIC with a hand doing the sign of horns. The emojis are really small and it was difficult to make anything out. So, after trying some variations, I found one that worked best (the emoji you see above this text).

Origin story – here is a portion of what I wrote for our local bluegrass club newsletter:
Imagine you’re back in 7th grade and you’re going to your first dance in the mid-60’s. The girls are all over there. The boys are all over here. Everyone’s nervous. No one knows what to do or what to expect. And then the band starts playing. Luckily…Read More

Is it just me – or is there a general thing at many open-mic events where people chat throughout performers’ sets? It’s a tad frustrating!
I’m going to have to purchase a massive stack and turn it up to 11!

You’re spot-on, Joe. A few open-mics that I’ve been to, the audience really respects the musicians and there’s definitely also an unwritten law that says that if most people are keeping their conversations generally quieter, then they will too, however, one open-mic that I performed at recently was at absurd conversation level even before it…Read More

It does seem to be usual here in the UK unfortunately – I think people tend to think of them as more informal events so tend to talk more. If it is a free entry gig in a pub it is hard to control that unfortunately. What is worse is when there is a booked artist at a free entry gig and people talk all the way through – this happened at several…Read More
