Finding individual free sample patches is great when you need a hyper-specific sound, but multi-instrument suites and starter bundles offer the highest return on investment for your hard drive space.
Instead of downloading dozens of standalone instruments from scattered sources, the bundles featured on this page deliver comprehensive, all-in-one compositional toolkits. From massive 12GB multi-mic symphonic suites to expanding sonic playgrounds featuring percussion, synth pads, and world textures, these packages offer everything you need to start scoring or producing right out of the box—all without spending a dime.

If you don’t own Kontakt, Komplete Start is a total no-brainer.This isn’t an ad or affiliate link, and I have no relationship with Native Instruments other than being a long-time paying customer; this is a sincere opinion. I have been buying every version of Native Instruments Komplete since probably the earliest version. I love it. Komplete Start includes dozens of great-sounding sample libraries for Kontakt and numerous plugins.

Thirty orchestral presets, with 4+ GB of “25 string-, 9 brass- and 12 wind-articulations, plus playable percussion and choir.” This sounds great and is a lot of fun to play with sequenced string and horn / woodwind parts. Developers often make free version of their commercial sample library lines and this is an example of a developer who hit it out of the park.

This is a great little package of a lot of different libraries taylored for cinematic composing. Some of the libraries ranges are very limited, but everything sounds great. From the developer: “16 free cinematic instruments ranging from soft strings to thunderous drums; includes sounds from our acclaimed Symphobia series.”

Glade is a beautiful-sounding collection of 19 instruments suitable for cinematic music production. It’s really surprising that a free instrument has multiple mic positions. Strings, woodwinds, percussion, world instruments, solo vocals — it’s really a nice blend of instruments. This was my first experience installing a sample library from Audio Imperia, and it’s as good as first impressions get. The only caveat is that some instruments ranges are very restricted. But overall, this is a very worth addition. I would put it in the category of no-brainer. It’s extremely generous of the developer. Glade weighs in at 4.41GB, while the multi mic version, Glad Studio, is 12GB.
