Best Free Kontakt World, Folk & Historical Instrument Libraries

Traditional and world instruments bring distinct cultural color, expressive resonance, and authentic organic textures to modern scoring, folk, and hybrid productions. From expressive woodwinds like the Armenian duduk and Chinese xiao to unique traditional stringed instruments like the yangqin, these instruments add instant character that general orchestral patches cannot replicate.
This guide rounds up the best free ethnic and world instrument libraries for Native Instruments Kontakt, covering:
  • World Woodwinds: Expressive solo duduks and vertical end-blown flutes.
  • Traditional Strings & Percussion: Hammered dulcimers, traditional plucked instruments, and unique folk mouth instruments.
(Note: Looking for traditional orchestral wind or string sections? Check out our dedicated guides for Free Kontakt String Libraries and Free Kontakt Brass & Woodwind Libraries.)

World Colors Clar Duduk (Evolution Series)

Format: Kontakt Player
A deep-sampled, expressive Armenian duduk capturing the rich, warm, and melancholic character of the traditional double-reed instrument.

Jade Ethnic Orchestra Xiao Freebie (Strezov Sampling)

Format: Kontakt Player
A free sample selection featuring the Chinese xiao (a traditional vertical end-blown bamboo flute), known for its soft, mellow, and atmospheric tone.

Balkan Ethnic Orchestra Duduk Freebie (Strezov Sampling)

Format: Kontakt Player
A playable solo duduk excerpt taken from Strezov Sampling’s flagship Balkan collection, designed for expressive melodic scoring.

Jaw Harp (EVA Instruments)

Format: Kontakt (full version)
A compact and lightweight sampled jaw harp (Jew’s harp), offering organic metallic rhythmic plucks and overtone articulations.

Yangqin (Native Instruments)

Format: Kontakt Player
A traditional Chinese hammered dulcimer featuring bamboo mallets striking silk strings. Offers extensive control over tremolos, ornamentations, sound design layers, and dynamic phrasing (included in the free Komplete Start bundle).

Hurdy Gurdy (Sonokinetic)

Format: Kontakt Player
The folks at Sonokinetic sampled a traditional Dutch Hurdy Gurdy (also known as a Draaillier). The sample library contains more than 1,400 samples, obviously, a lot of work went into this free instrument.

The Mither

Format: Kontakt (full version)
This Kontakt instrument was once at VST Buzz. I can’t find a web page for it, but I found the Kontakt file and an audio demo. The instrument sounds similar to a dulcimer.
