Hey, yesterday was National Drummer Day here in the US and no one even wished me a happy drummer day. Come on guy!  So JST has their National Drummer Day weekend sale and has the Miles McPherson Drums for Kontakt (full version) normally $149 for only $9.99 and I’m getting ready to pull the trigger. FTR, there is some history here. It was Cory Pelazarri’s savage take on some shortcomings with the mixing capabilities of this sample library he otherwise really liked that caused me to reach out to him several years ago (look at his first comment below the video if you want to understand why I call it a “savage take.” Cory wrote, “UPDATE – Joey Sturgis Drums simply does not care about their product or its customer base. Despite customer feedback, they’ve maintained silence and refuse to optimise the patches, so it looks like my custom patches are the closest you’ll get to a smooth working experience with Miles McPherson Drums. sigh Developers really need to keep their egos in check.”).

Of course, when an influencer is honest like that, developers stop giving them free stuff, sponsorships, and the promise of money and work. So, it’s an easy path to failure as an influencer. But I loved that this was the only honest influencer I’ve ever known of.  (Yes, hopefully the many influencers I’ve spoken with won’t read this! But I can’t pretend influencers are anything less than promotional pitch people who make their money by deceiving people that they’re unbiased, that is how the scam works — they earn people’s trust and then sell it to the highest bidder to shill products and services; Cory, idealistically, thought he could be totally honest with his reviews and still maintain good relationships with developers; sadly, that’s not how the arrangement works).

I was about to get this just because it’s cheap, but the horrible-looking UI made me change my mind.

Okay, I bought this last night and today I installed it, along with Cory Pellazari’s presets. There are two full acoustic drum kits and they sound excellent. There has been an update to the Kontakt file since Cory’s review, but I don’t know if they used Cory’s excellent recommendations (they really should have). So here are my initial observations:

Both kits sound great and natural. This absolutely does not reflect a $10 sampled acoustic drum kit. It sounds excellent. My only disappointment is that it doesn’t have a general MIDI mapping, or if it does, I haven’t figured out how to find it and the manual doesn’t explain it. That said, you can re-map things to the way you like them, but I did take for granted that the kit would have a premapped General MIDI option. As far as I can see , it doesn’t. Beyond that, this is a great deal.

As far as the UI, yeah, it’s not pretty and it’s dated. But it’s straight forward, so that wasn’t a deal breaker for me.
