At the ER with my son who was hit by a car tonight when he and his friend were walking in a crosswalk (the driver, an elderly woman, claimed the sun was in her eyes and she couldn’t see that there were two pedestrians in the middle of her car — my son’s friend jumped and barely escaped being hit and my son was hit and thrown what witnesses to say was 10 -12 feet from the impact). He’s going to be okay, but I’m likely not going to be posting much, or maybe I will. But if I’m gone for a while know that I didn’t abandon this place.
And yeah, another overshare.

Hello dear Peter, its super sad to read this, hope your son will be very fast oki and full of life… offer speed recovery with minimum trauma from accident…
Thanks all. My son is doing well. I’m just a little burned out from everything.
I had a meeting I was planning for today with 8Dio / SoundPaint around things we can do with LM that I need to reschedule. I’ll try for next week.
I realize that activity on the site is pretty low at the moment. I’m going to try to do things to get us to have more fun here. If you have suggestions — think of this place as ours, not as Peters. Think of it as a party that’s at my house and everyone gets to decide what the theme of the party is and what toppings they want on the pizza (hey, I’m open minded, but we’re definitely getting pizza!).

Good news about your son. So glad to hear some positive news with everything else that’s going on in the world right now. Regardless of “which side” you’re on, no one seems happy right now. But this forum remains a bright spot for me.
I love the idea of tips. Especially regarding how to get the best/most out of virtual instruments. Ideally we could have sub-threads centered around key developers to make it super easy to find pertinent info. I’m always on the lookout for how to make my acoustic instruments sound more real.

Thanks. It occurred to me that quick tips can be so practical and have made a big difference for me. Even if you’re sharing something you found from someone else — like a great short video from YouTube. Most of us don’t do music for a living, so getting to the useful stuff quickly is significant, and if we can help each other do that, I think that’s big.

I have to share something relative to that, with all that’s gone on in my life this week.
So, I created this place after managing digital and social media at large global brands and my own business for two plus decades — literally before the term social media existed. I was and remain disgusted by the toxic state of social media — what’s been normalized today. Beyond professionally, I almost never post in general, public social media. I post to a closed group of 300 friends and acquaintances of VARIOUS political backgrounds. I have friends in the US who are conservative, liberal, libertarian, politically indifferent, progressive — but I do not have relationships with racist, bigots, and extremists.
I have a background that includes business strategy director to the C-level (the CEO and other business unit execs) for a Fortune 200 where I spent several years developing and editing publications on political extremism and terrorism risk that were read by US and other government officials, our group met with the US president and helped form the DHS in the US, and two of our execs were on the DHS advisory board. Our team included conservatives (mostly), liberals, and progressives. Our billionaire CEO, who I advised, like most billionaires and every CEO I ever worked with, was, of course, conservative — and he was a close friend of the then-president. Now, I grew up pretty poor working class, and the CEO and execs referred to me as coming from “the wrong side of the tracks.” But I never thought groups like the alt-right, Proud Boys would become normalized and people in groups like CF would be affiliated. What really hit me is that an FB group I have been in for people from my neighborhood who grew up together, where I’m known for being the son of a police officer / police union leader and musician music teacher who taught a lot of residents, are engaged in really extreme posts praising deaths of regular citizens simply for hyperpartisan reasons. I don’t comment in those threads, I realize that people aren’t listening to one another and they’re abusive to one another. Again, I have friends all over the political spectrum, but we share one thing in common, we treat each other well. I have one friend, a former politician and she told me that she would really like to see me run for political office and I would be the first person from the other party she would ever vote for. I told her that I am not a fan of politicians and would not want to get into politics, ever and, as she knows, I’m a political independent. I vote on issues, not personalities or by party lines.
But I saw in that FB group I’m in people at each other throats. People aren’t talking to one another to listen and consider other perspectives. They’re throwing daggers at one another. It’s about who can get the most stabs in, not about trying to find common values and common ground. I want no part of those toxic environments. I don’t care if someone professes to share the same ideological views as me. If they think hurling insults at other people and fighting is productive, I want no part of that and I don’t share that worldview. I don’t relate. But that perspective has become all to common.
I created LinkedMusicians to be an environment that doesn’t accept people being abusive to one another or people being strong-armed or bullied into not being able to share a negative experience or opinion with a developer because they own the site or are a big advertiser or sponsor. When we have people who aren’t a fit – and we’ve only had a handful that weren’t a fit to date (and that’s far less than I anticipated), my take is that it should be a simple matter of saying, “Sorry things didn’t work out, but we need to part ways.” It’s as simple as that. But you can’t run a community committed to respect, acceptance, encouragement and valuing our diversity on various levels, if you look the other way at individuals who make it very clear that they don’t share those values. I’d much rather have a smaller community of people who are kind to one another than a large community of people who behave like they do on the big social media platforms and the big forums in this space. I created this place because I believe that there are others like me, who care about how they treat others and want to be treated with respect and kindness. It’s really that simple. And a spoiler alert. If people that weren’t a fit go to CF to lie — and all of our moderators can confirm that because this is electronic and there is a record of every interaction and every person that has been suspended from here has been reviewed with the moderation team, it’s never he said / she said, it’s always a group of at least three people reviewing incidents — it tells you that these people were not a fit for a non-toxic community. Of course, there’s plenty of places for them to go, but this isn’t one of those places. If you’ve ever managed or moderated a social media group, forum, subreddit, you’ll be familiar with all of that kind of stuff. If not, it my come as a surprise to you that people who seem to be civil, may not necessarily always be that way.
There’s no doubt that LinkedMusicians is an experimental community. The idea of a non-toxic social media community is one that would be extremely difficult to scale. If that became an issue — and obviously, at this level of interaction, it isn’t — I would stop signups and focus on steps to better manage the community rather than lower the standard for behavior.
