I’d suggest that you do a comparison of the articulations of each of the libraries for a apples to apples comparison.

Beyond the articulations, it comes down to the level of detail that you want or need. 8Dio libraries are serially incredibly detailed. Their original market was pro cinematic composers, so that extreme level of detail matters a lot to pros. For example, 8Dio piano libraries have pedal up and pedal down samples with various velocities. That makes for much larger sample libraries than the more common method of sampling with the sustain pedal up at multiple velocities (and no pedal down samples). Many pro composers greatly appreciate this difference and may use a smaller library in mock ups and then substitute the more detailed library for the final production.

Now, as a hobbyist, it’s always going to be about what you like best. For professional purposes, it’s always going to be what sounds most authentic out of sample library attempting to simulate a real piano and a real orchestra. 8Dio has started making smaller versions of some of their SoundPaint libraries — which I think is a great idea that will make a lot of hobbyists — who don’t require the incredible detail pros demand ( personally don’t) — happy. But these 8Dio libraries were created for the pro market, so they reflect their preferences. In this case, I know this directly from consulting to 8Dio.

You should keep in mind that when a developer creates light version of large libraries, they need to hire people to go in and chop samples, create new scripts, etc. so there is a cost associated with sizing down libraries that would actually bring the price up of these highly discounted libraries. Compare the cost of the Spitfire libraries to the cost of these 8Dio libraries.

Thank you for providing this extra context and wisdom, Peter! I think that observing the articulations in a fair comparison is a great way to go about it, comparing any two libraries. Especially here.

I guess where my head is at now, is, if 8dio has superior detail in their libraries over others, and hypothetically I was that professional composer (where neither money or drive space was an issue for me), would i be better off with 8dio libraries if I objectively wanted that more “realistic sound” in all of my productions? Lets say the king of England asked me to make him a vst violin track and he wants it to sound like he’s sitting in the room with the violin.. would i go with 8dio out of all the developers out there?
And if the answer is yes, why the heck are they priced so cheap? I’m just so used to being skeptical and this one has had me baffled for a while. I also know you don’t work for 8dio Peter, nor do i expect you to have all the answers here haha, I’ve just had a bit of an uninformed bias toward them for a while solely based on knowing the drive space requirements. But if they are up to par or better than everyone else out there and sounds as great or better than other top dollar libraries out there, i may just need to upgrade my drive capacity lol.
