    @thesteven

    I wonder if they were brought down by a data loss event (hardware failure, ransomware event, system hacked, etc.).
    Many companies think they’re covered – that all they have to do was restore their most recent backup and rebuild from there only to discover

    1. Their backup data was not readily accessible.
      Because of its size (terabytes) their online backup data would take days or even weeks to download assuming that you had no dropouts or issues. So they had to pay extra to have a physical copy created and shipped to them (which could take days to create and days to ship and that’s before you can even start restoring the data).
      or
    2. They actually never tested doing restore and it either just didn’t work or they didn’t realize that the data was not usable (corrupted or an obsolete format because they never upgraded their backup software/hardware).
      or
    3. They failed to upgrade their backup strategy to keep it in sync with their business data growth and failed to backup what are now key relational databases or indexes (so now, for example, they can’t connect customer order numbers with items purchased).

    #2 use to be and maybe still is the most common that I’d see for small to midsized businesses.

    Unfortunately many businesses never recover from a major data disaster because they didn’t have the proper verified contingency plans in effect.
    I seem to recall seeing an analysis about 10 years back that said 70% of businesses that suffer a major data loss go out of business.

    I like(d) Best Service, hope they can successfully resurface.
    As far as their lack of communication part of it could be that it’s taking them days to realize just how screwed they are.

    Saw something along these lines happen with a major company not that far back where their systems went down and everyday they thought they’d be back up tomorrow, but tomorrow they’d discover new issues complicating things. Only know the details because I knew some people working there; but it took over week before they could partially do business and much longer before they fully recovered.
    They didn’t want to drive their customers to their competitors so they didn’t say much of anything to the public.
    It was a lose / lose situation – either option risked losing customers.
