First, NI put Alicia Key’s on sale for $9, then, more recently, IK started selling their much more recent deep-sampled piano line for $29 for each title or $99 for 9 of them ($11 each), it’s becoming more difficult for piano sample developers to move their $100-plus piano sample libraries. Indie Kontakt, UVI, and HALion sample developers would need to move A LOT of product to make up for the big margins they used to make.

I hope this kind of disruption—which started with orchestral libraries — hits drum sample libraries soon. I was looking at my Best Service purchases, which included Indie SDX I bought a couple of years ago, on sale for around $54. In the last year, I don’t think I’ve seen it on sale for even twice that price. UJAM Virtual Drummer libraries—which I don’t use — are regularly on sale for $29. While they’re nowhere near the detail of SDXs or probably even EZXs, I hope they can inspire other drum library developers to bring down their prices, even if only for sales. Steven Slate Drums has dropped very low on sales. But the two big acoustic drum ecosystems—Toontrack and XLN — are holding firm. Of course, BFD is heavily discounting, but their libraries are very old, and their history is so plagued with problems, I don’t think they’re likely to have a great impact on the market.
