A disclosure, but with affiliate relationships, companies often give affiliates free products so that they’ll be enthusiastic about it. Heck, cclarry was getting free products from developers when he came to this site, and a couple of them sent me codes for NFRs, which I’ve still never redeemed. Of course, small developers love when someone posts their sales. So if you post prolifically on a deals forum that gets decent traffic, the odds are good that you’ll be approached by developers who throw NFRs at you in exchange for posting their deals and — they hope — talking up their products.

When developers to that, they expect favors in return and would certainly not love my style of being really candid about what I like and don’t like and then amplifying it when a customer has a really bad experience, like our own Jorge did with Karanyi. The retailers tend to give affiliates more room — that’s how larger companies tend to run their programs. Now, that’s very different than the way they treat influencers they pay from $2k to $25k to do reviews, talking up their products. I always make it clear that I have no interest in ever being an influencer. That said, I don’t generate significant affiliate revenue, so any of these companies could easily terminate my affiliate status at any point. They don’t because they see that this community has strong potential to grow, significantly increasing the affiliate sales it generates.
