NOTE: I totally didn’t notice the complete butchering of the pronunciation of the word “timbre” in the video. Being the son of a music teacher, who studied under several music teachers totally didn’t result in me making a face when I heard that…Okay, it might have.

We’ve released a few string libraries in the past, including a previous vault called R+D Strings which has a lush, enveloping quality to it. “Lofi Strings” has a more nostalgic sonic palette, owing to the fact we’ve processed these clean string recordings through a vintage cassette deck.

First introduced in the 60s, the compact cassette revolutionised music accessibility, but it came with its quirks. The magnetic tape adds soft compression and saturation, flutter and “wow” that causes pitch drift, the occasional “drop-out” (meaning the sound sometimes mutes from the tape not reaching the tape head), and a subtle, omnipresent hiss. This all defined the sonic identity of a generation, and overtime these idiosyncrasies shaped a sound that we now associate with nostalgia, warmth, and analog realism. With “LoFi Strings” we’ve honoured these imperfections and have brought them into the orchestral world.
