Forums › DEALS › Virtual & Physical Music Gear Deals › 🎉 🍊 Orange Friday 35% OFF + 2X Bonus Points!
NOTE: When I say the name Orange Tree Samples to sample library developers, they usually say things like “brilliant” and “innovative.” Orange Tree Samples creates the most realistic-sounding guitar and bass sample libraries on the market. They combine sampling techniques, innovative Kontakt scripting and physical modeling principles, resulting in what was likely the first guitar sample libraries to make it into final production for soundtracks for major television, movies, video games, and even pop and hip hop songs. Because I’ve worked with them, I can tell you that their customers include a whose who of some of my all-time favorite rock musicians and some of the biggest film composers in the industry – yes, he’s an Orange Tree Samples customer, but I can’t say that name. I went from being a huge fan of Orange Tree Samples to giving the founder, Greg, advice on marketing, product, and branding strategy. But I never stopped being a huge fan. I use OTS libraries in almost every project I’ve ever done. There’s only one other developer whose libraries I use ALMOST as much, Toontrack SD3.
Starting today, you can get 35% OFF all our virtual instruments by adding the following discount code to your cart:

@gregjazz So, we haven’t touched base in a bit. I thought I’d use your Black Friday sale to ask if there’s anything in the pipeline at Orange Tree Samples that you can share with us? Any new sample libraries, updates to existing libraries, new endorsers — just a general check in for all things Orange Tree Samples. Hmm, maybe I should make that official and do regular check-ins with developers.
Yesterday, out of the blue, a Kontakt developer whose libraries I absolutely love, sent me an email to tell me that he is regularly seeing more traffic at his site coming from LinkedMusicians than VI-Control. That surprised the heck out of me, as obviously, we’re a pretty new community (we only publicly launched in April of this year). But it was really encouraging. We should have a call. But I’d love to just have an open conversation about what Orange Tree Samples is up to and what’s in the pipeline.

I always love the opportunity to have a conversation about our sample libraries and what we have planned for the future. That’s actually one of my favorite parts about our Summer group buy sales–they always spark a lot of cool discussions about the updates and new products we’re currently working on, and also gives people a chance to share ideas and suggestions. A lot of the instruments we sample and features that get added are directly due to the feedback we receive.
One of the next releases we have in store for the Evolution series is a vintage telecaster. I was surprised by how different it sounds from our existing Evolution Texas Twang tele–a much warmer sound, and there isn’t as much of that “in your face” twang going on from the bridge pickup. Consequently, the factory presets cover a lot more ground, from classic rock tones to funk and R&B. It should be a pretty versatile electric guitar library! If there are any sounds that you’d like to hear in particular, or additional strumming pattern styles included, I’d love to hear your thoughts!
There’s an update for The Famous E Electric Piano on the horizon, which most notably adds a new cabinet model effect. One of the cool things we included are cabinet options recorded using binaural mics to give you the feeling of sitting right at the original electric piano. Beyond that, there are new tempo-syncing modes for the tremolo (and chorus, even).
Even with Rosewood Grand still being a fairly recent release, I’m already collecting ideas for its next update. One of the things I’m the most proud of with that virtual instrument is how it models a lot of the inner workings of a real piano to give you a more immersive and inspirational playing experience. The next thing we’re planning to add is different release speeds. That way–provided that your keyboard outputs MIDI release velocity–you can release a key slowly and get the sound of it gradually getting muted. That should make a noticeable advancement in realism, especially in the piano’s low register. I want to add some more options for effects, too, like delay, chorus, and a limiter. Finally, for people who really like to get into the nuts and bolts, being able to tweak the voicing of each key individually would be really cool, too. I did a little experimentation with that, and it was surprising how much that changes the character of the piano.
Anyway, there’s a lot more going on in terms of instruments and updates in various stages of development, but those are a few things that stand out that I wanted to mention.

Rosewood and Famous E, two absolute wonders.
Here’s hoping a Wurlitzer may be in the works too.
I’ve been trying to persuade Greg to do a Wurly since prior to his releasing Famous E! But I always say, “I’m interested in this not as a marketing strategist, but as a guy who is obsessed with the Wurly, so it’s not any kind of strategic advice based on my assessing the market, it’s based on my experience that you know how to create great innovative sample libraries and the fact that I’m obsessed with Wurys.” I did the same thing with the Vintage Violin Bass. It doesn’t have the same personal connection to me as Wurly — we didn’t own a Hofner bass when I was a kid. But I grew up as a huge McCartney fan and that tone is pure magic to my ears. But the Wurly, I would sneak into our family room late at night and put on headphones and play that thing — even at like 4 or 5 years old. I thought that the electric piano made the most beautiful, magical sounds.
I suppose I can’t share what Greg has told me about it, but I do know the answer to your question. Just know I was trying to persuade Greg to do the Hofner bass library for more than a decade before it came out! That’s why he asked me if I wanted to do a demo for it. He knew I was so obsessed with it, that I’d probably be able to write something very easily. I did. I wrote several songs and then I decided to show him a song I wrote when I was maybe 14 years old that I thought sounded very McCartney-ish, and that’s the one we used. It has a Wurly on it!

Hi Greg, I’m still hoping for a mandolin update that unlocks tremolo speed from DAW tempo. MusicSampling’s Hoard Mandolin does it well (but the player held his pick incorrectly, making the sound way too scratchy). They use CC1 to control volume (which is quite a convenient way to do that). I would also like another CC to control tremolo speed (with an added option to lock tempo to DAW bpm like you have now). That would make your mandolin unbeatable.
Please add this to your to-do list.
Thank you for reading.

@fretman, I’m going to tag @gregjazz, because, he didn’t create this thread, he probably doesn’t get an email notice when someone posts in it. Now, because no one can see inflection in writing — I swear to you that shouldn’t come off all lecture-like! I was just passing on a tip, I swear! Plus, I know Greg pretty well and he greatly values feedback, as every developer should. I know firsthand because our relationship began with me being a superfan of his work, giving him feedback.

Okay, Super Fan reference tangent rabbit hole since I made a superfan reference.
I grew up pretty close to where George Wendt lives. He was much older than me, but my late mother used to walk to church and go to lunch afterwards with George’s mom (I picked up the tab for some of those lunches). I have one more connection to the Super Fans. I was on a date with the woman who later became my wife and met and chatted with Chris Farley — who was a friend of one of my friends — just days before he passed. And yes, I’m a huge Chicago sports fan, including the Chicago Bears.

I have that on my to do list, though it isn’t a simple checkbox to tick. There are a few approaches to investigate, and it will involve larger changes to the UI in order to add an articulation speed control. And the optional ability to assign it to a MIDI CC instead of just a static speed adjustment will be important, too.
Because the tremolos weren’t sampled at specific tempos, the speed adjustment would just be a general percentage that lets you slow them down or speed them up from their as-recorded speed.
Ultimately a MIDI-based tremolo that works like the playable rolls in our Paradise Marimba library would be better, assuming that the scripted tremolo would also incorporate certain details and humanistic timing/velocity variances so that they sound natural.
