NOTE: This is completely a tangent, so please, feel free to skip it if you’re not interested in music related tangents! I think they can be fun.

I’ve been an AudioThing customer for two decades. They (really Carlo Castellano) are super talented and have great prices. But I was amused recently when Carlo, the very talented developer behind AudioThing, contacted me out of the blue, because I don’t know him and I don’t recall ever having contact with him, I’m just a regular paying customer and his plugins and libraries have always worked flawlessly, so I’ve never had a need to contact him. So, Carl learned from another developer that I’m knowledgeable on international trademark laws and a bit obsessed with Wurlitzer electric pianos. He had been contacted by a sketchy individual who’s been trying to shake down various sample and plugin developers that make Wurly libraries and plugins. The guy claims that he owns the Wurly trademark and is the heir to the Wurlitzer company — both false claims (Gibson bought the Wurlitzer company when it acquired Baldwin); this guy is probably a descendent of the founder, but that’s the only connection. He’s registered trademarks, but he appears to be doing it only to shake down companies using the Wurlitzer brand name — but he hasn’t registered Wurly, that’s a dead trademark. But not every registered trademark is able to be well defended. This is where amateurs get it wrong. In any event, out of gratitude for my time, Carlo gave me his Wurly plugin and the Wurly is now part of his sale. But what I wanted to share that really stuck with me? Carlo’s video demo song for his plugin. The progression sounds very familiar, so I don’t know if this is a cover or an original, but I do know that I love it and Carlo clearly has talent as a musician.
